Does this automatically come on when approached

Yes. It has two settings, one setting activates as you get the broom about three inches away. The other setting is manual and activates the vacuum when the large button is pressed with either the broom or your foot. I turned mine to manual as the dogs would sometimes activate the proximity sensor and it would startle them. It’s easy enough to tap with my toe.

How often do you have to dump it? It doesn't seem like it would hold a lot of dirt etc.

The dust bucket seems as large as a small bathroom trash can. I have dumped it about every twenty “dustpan-fulls”. If that gives you an idea. Each time I dump it, it is only about half full, mostly with dog hairs around the filter.
