Required Text for Course
I ordered this book for a course on how African-Americans have shaped current day Paris. For the course we had to read several books on different aspects of Africans and even African-Americans that traveled to France. This novel has to do with a family centered around the grandmother whose from the Caribbean and whose daughter brought her to France in exile. As the novel progresses we find that Julia is fed up with Paris and longs for her life back in the Caribbean. We find out that she is deeply religious and deeply committed to her relationship with her abusive husband. The novel is told from different characters Julia, Julia's daughter, and Julia's grandchildren. Eventually by the close of the novel Julia returns to the Caribbean with her grandchildren who've assimilated into French culture and life since that is all that they know. I bought this book used and as such there were some pen markings and underlinings. The print was really small, and that didn't help with the amount of time taken to read it. If you are interested in places in France which are associated with the African-American experience and Parisian landmarks in general this book is a good choice.
