Mommy issues
Let's face it; if you're mom was Julianne Moore, you'd let her go for a ride too. Everyone gets so hung up on incest and doesn't state the obvious... if mommy is a total fox and wants a relationship, why not? This kid had physiological issues because he couldn't accept the card's life dealt him. He should have been great full so many men and women was attracted to him, should have accepted his father wasn't important enough to worry about having a relationship with and should have nurtured his "special" relationship with his mommy. He should have been all over that...

Sad Story
Yes, it is relatively quiet without all the noise and explosions; not all murders have to be that of the Freddy Krueger variety, nor need the characters be wild and batty. This is a quiet movie with very intense moments, which often do not mix well. Something gets lost in the quiet. I guess people aren't used to that.I suppose it also helps if you come from money and rubbed elbows with this family or families like them. I absolutely recall the story of Antony, it made a buzz in the household for sure. Riker's was one of the most feared prisons in Jersey, I recall that. I am going to gamble that most people would have preferred some scenes cut short or even eliminated while focusing on sex, the incest and his time in the institution and then what ultimately led to his demise. I don't know, people get off on others' pain. I am guessing there isn't enough of that in this movie for most people, however, the pain registers quite deeply and it's gauche to make a riot out of it. Do make a note of it.Personally, I am a big Julianne Moore fan, and I absolutely adore Eddy Redmayne, so this was my draw. Both of them delivered, as per usual.

Folie a deux or Gatsby on heroin...riveting but not exactly warm and lighthearted!
Incestuous folie a deux- not the feel-good movie of the year... the ending reminded me of "Sid & Nancy" in that it conveyed claustrophobic dysfunction and sickness a little too well. Two people glued together by intertwined pathology that feels like love to them and they're shut into their own world. Makes you feel icky, then makes you grateful for normality, even when it's dull. There's one scene where you wonder "are they going to play out this whole incident in real time? Do I really need to see all this?" But then you realize that it puts the viewer right in the mode and feeling of their sickness and is very effective. You have to really be curious about dark psychology and the dysfunction of the ultra-rich to watch this film. Since I am, I found this riveting, but I think most people will find it stomach-turning and pointless if you're not interested in true crime. This motivated me to get the book; if you're the type fascinated by Truman Capote and his circle of "swans", you will want to as well. It's like Gatsby on heroin or something... good, but gnarly and not exactly life-affirming.Moore is amazing; and the real Barbara Baeklund was a striking redhead, too, so it works visually also. There are some odd bits of acting, which may or may not be accurate, by various characters. Perhaps these "cafe Society" types were this stilted and contrived, it's plausible. Hard to judge... This is a memorable depiction of a surreal family tragedy. Now that I'm reading the book, I'd say they condensed it well, certain details are altered, yet it's true in spirit to the story. I recommend this with the above cautions for the right audience.

Not the Exciting Movie the Teaser Makes You Believe
Here are the words the teaser for this movie used: Heiress! Scandal! Socialite! Sexuality! So this movie has to be fast-paced, exciting, and all about someone we've all heard about, right? Wrong- this is a slow, plodding, Dysfunctional-Idle-Rich-Americans-in-Europe movie. And it makes you despise everyone in it.The movie is one long slog of an American family behaving badly in Europe while they lounge around and do nothing. Because they're all miserable, mentally ill, or both. Julianne Moore plays the heiress/socialite, and such a person did exist, but it's no one you've heard of. Most of the movie centers around her getting-creepier-by-the-scene relationship with her son, who is the most messed up of all. The "sexuality" promised in the teaser is exactly what you feared after enduring this awful mother-and-son combo: these two are committing incest with each other. So now, not only is the movie plodding and dull, it's creepy and cringeworthy. And Yes, this film shows the incest scenes. Finally, the "scandal" promised in the teaser doesn't come at the beginning of the film - which would improve it - but rather at the very end. And it's not much of a scandal. In fact, it's very predictable based on how sick these people are. And by the end of this sick, plodding movie about despicable people, you don't really care either.I gave this movie two stars because the camera work and the scenery is nice. But one star is just as reasonable. Beware of anyone giving this movie four or five stars... they're drinking some Kool Aid you don't want to know.

A Dark Study of Human Nature.
This movie is dark and tragic and sadly, true. I have worked with mother's similar to this character and know how deeply disturbing it can be to face the reality that people like this exist. I am not surprised at the poor reviews but I do think the movie deserves a fair and informed review. There is no way to deeply explore the characters in a film this length because the psychological dysfunction is so severe. In a sense, the murder is justified if any murder can be justified. This is clearly not a movie to enjoy but rather, a movie to explore what makes people so disturbed. The acting by all is superb. Eddie Redmayne really had to find something inside of himself which was foreign to his nature as did Julianne Moore. I think they did that and within the confines of a film like this, they did this tragic story justice. It is not for the general audience, however, if you want to see what the dark side of a mother's obsession can be, give this movie a chance. Be informed of what can and does happen in the lives of some people.

Sad but true. Remember this as you watch.
I have known about this true story for many years and at various times a series of writers have approached the subject and then withdrawn or found it too difficult. The story is horrid, be under no illusions and the tragic tale is almost Greek in its impact. Those who were bored by this film or failed to read the final heart reaching information miss the whole point. This is NOT Hollywood, this is not an over cooked drama, this is a true story. There only remains to be said that the direction, visuals; especially the passing of time conveyed so subtly, and above all the acting holds a grip which is both emotional and discomforting. The film is at times a challenge since it does not flinch from the facts and the real relationships in any way.Although the film is not new I have only just seen it having been very nervous about how the story could be conveyed. The answer turned out to be superbly, and if you want to watch superb acting and a deeply uncomfortable depiction of an incestuous and ultimately tragic true story then watch this film.

Handle with care.
Brilliant settings. Superb acting, as usual, by the gorgeous Julianne Moore and also a young Eddie Redmayne. However, I have to admit that the penultimate scene between Miss Moore and Mr Redmayne made me squirm! An excellent film, but read some of the reviews before watching. Some may find it rather unpleasant, although I have to say that I didn't consider any of it gratuitous.

Just original version
I didn't watch yet because in the product details were english, french and spanish like spoken languages and I thought it is dubbed, and it is not. It is spoken in english and some parts of dialogue in french or spanish. Any subtitle in spanish or french. So I need to find the perfect moment to watch in english and try to understand de most possible.

Not everyone's tapas.
Not an easy watch but a worthwhile one I think. It certainly wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea and the acting can be a bit hit and miss at times. Cadaques is stunning by the way, well worth a look.
