Simple and works like a champ!
This little tool is the real deal! I had a Craftsman electronic stud "finder" and it was so frustrating using it, it seemed like it could not find the same stud twice even though you came right back looking for it. LOL! NOT this baby! It JUMPS right on to a Sheetrock screw as you pass one and HOLDS on so well you can remove your hand, even on ceilings, and the powerful magnet keeps it locked to the drywall. Did I mention the cheap price?! Look no further.

Stud Thud Works Well
Happy to report that I found the studs buried behind the lathe and plaster in our historic home. I slowly worked my way along the wall with the Stud Thud and located the studs for hanging the cabinet. Taking my time it became quite obvious where the studs were. By slowly moving the stud finder across the wall I could observe the magnet start to move as it approached many nails. It also worked well through the ceramic tile to locate the studs in the tub surround. My husband has no idea how I managed to accurately mark the studs. This shall remain one of those mysteries of marriage for him. I love that he thinks I am a wizard. The battery-powered stud-finder that we have in the garage can stay out there in the cold. Using the electronic stud finder I was never confident that I was going to strike wood when I drilled through the drywall. The Stud Thud, however, works great. I was certain that I knew where the wood lay.

First one to work reliably on our Plaster/Lathe walls
Basic but works. This is essentially a very strong magnet, that slaps forward when it finds nails or anything magnetic. That slap makes it easy to use. We've tried many stud finders on our heavy plaster and lathe walls - they didn't work well at all. Our lathe is held on with tiny tacks, and few magnetic finders even detect them. This one does, the thud/slap of the magnet is faint but it is there - finally!!!Pros: strong magnet, audible and tactile thud when it detects a nail/screw/tack. Easy to use and no false positives.Cons: plastic base had sharp edges from where plastic injection when it was made. That's the area you drag across your walls, leaving visible scrapes. Of all the places to put your plastic injection point - really poor choice. I deburred the base to fix that issue. Easy to do, but shouldn't have come that way.Recommendation: Works well, no batteries needed, reliable and small. Definitely recommended.

Great company. First one had a problem and they promptly replaced it.
Like how easy it make finding a stud but Don't drop it! Says it will stay on the wall and it does, but it fell off and the top separated from the body. It only dropped about 3 feet and thought it would be stronger than that. Still works fine, just does not look great with the duct tape holding it together, which I'll replace with glue when I pick some up.UPDATE: The company saw my review and promptly sent me a new one. Looks like the design has improved and it seems much stronger. Gotta love companies that care about their customers enough to do this.

OK for non-precise jobs
So this is an OK solution if you are trying to get an idea where a stud is. But if you need precision I would pay a little more and get a true stud finder. It works OK. but in apartments or where there is a lot of stucco or other materials it is not strong enough to pick up the stud. when compared with more precise stud finders this missed 40 percent of the time. Again it depends on the wall materials and other factors so I don't necessarily fault the device but I wouldn't use it for precise hanging like a TV, etc.

Poorly built
The blue cap on top had come off when I received it. I tried to push it back together, but the first time it went "thud" for a screw or nail the internal magnets fell out and I was only able to find one of the two. I ended up just throwing it away.

Cheap and not assembled well
I took it out of its packaging, and the blue cap on top fell off before I could even use it. I immediately tried to return it to Amazon and they said, "Keep it, you are a good customer." So I kept it, got a little crazy glue, fixed it and now it works. So, it turned out to be a good buy b/c it was free. But I wouldn't purchase it again because of it arriving broken. It needs more glue or a better sonic weld. I am giving it an extra star b/c Amazon let me keep it for free. They are smart. It would cost more to return it than it would to let me keep it. This is progressive thinking and very smart on their behalf.

Quick, Easy & Awesome
I was very skeptical of this, but needed a simple stud finder and decided it was a pretty low risk based on the price. I was so pleasantly surprised - it is great! It's extremely easy to use and if you haven't used one before, the instructions do a great job of explaining how it works. Don't waste your money on the electronic ones, especially if you are simply looking for something effective and quick. The "thumping" is loud and clear, unlike some of the "wiggly" magnetic ones. Everyone should have one of these. They would make a great gift for anyone moving into their first apartment or home.
