Useful for painting soldiers
I bought this book because I cast and paint metal toy soldiers. This book was very useful for showing various equipment configurations and also various colours used. Often when painting figures, one can get caught up in striving to get the colour "historically accurate." Sometimes it can become an obsession. This book shows, without intending to, that fabrics can, and do, fade and that colours can often be at artist discretion. Also, since so much US gear is produced from multiple factories and with different dye lots, it helps to see other colour possibilities. The photographs are wonderful and most are in colour. There are several b/w photos which are used to show equipment in historical context. The text can be a bit dry at times but I bought it for the photos and identification of what can sometimes be frustratingly difficult to identify pieces of equipment.

This features great descriptions, illustration, and explanation of American military web gear since World War I.

great guide. finding few, but some, omissions
Very helpful and informative. Didn't take long to memorize most of the information so I don't have to take the book everywhere when hunting specific items. I mention omissions but the author states why they exist, to get more in depth on featured items; still occasionally disappointed when I can't find mountain rucksacks, certain tool, corpsman or other bags and equipment. Worth the price since any item in here anymore costs more than the book and changes in web gear can be subtle.

A good introduction.
I have always been interested in militaria, and I wanted to know just how varied "uniform" equipment actually was back then. This book that is a good start for anyone interested in this topic. It's laid out in simple, straightforward, and comprehensive fashion. I am sure there are more detailed works out there, but as an introduction, this book fills the bill nicely.

average REFERENCE BOOK FOR THE PRICE
you get what you pay for. if you are seeking a further in-depth reference book on US MILITARY FIELD GEAR...then be prepared to lay out the bucks for the usual hardbound thick coffee-table format type reference book loaded with several all color photos which average $50-$95. this softcover primer from EUROPA MILITARIA publications is a basic layman's quick reference handy guide. for the experienced collector....something with more meat is required to sink your 782 collecting teeth into. for the novice collector, it is a low cost reference book not requiring too much space on your library shelf. for me, who has plenty of the more expensive reference books....a simple question such as WHEN DID US MILITARY FIELD GEAR FIRST START TO INCORPORATE VELCRO (as a fastener) BEGIN? cannot be conclusively answered by this or any of the reference books to my satisfaction.

Good for US Army WW1 & WW2 webbing
Great book, with good detail, and lots of well captioned photos. It mainly focuses on WW1 and WW2 with the Vietnam items dealt with quite briefly at the end. The one thing I would point out is that it does not deal with US Marine Corps webbing at all. The book only looks at US Army webbing used between 1910-1967.
