Journalism with no selective criticism!!
I have always felt that the so called "INTELLECTUAL BRIGADE" of India chooses to see only those which doesnt hurt their eyes. In the process a certain political group, or a certain section, or a stray incident gets the big Headline bashing whereas points requiring close scrutiny goes scot free.Recently, I bought a book called "Brushing Up the Years: A Cartoonist's History of India" which is a collection of the cartoons drawn by the legendary cartoonist R.K. Laxman. In this book he actually "PORTRAYS" what a Common man goes through in his bid for just living his life. His brush left no party, be it left or the centre, unscathed, no incident, which hurt the common man, go unnoticed. A true common man, he felt the need to portray every common man’s trouble without seeing the color or the creed, or the amount of vote the issue might fetch. No wonder his HERO(if we may call the dhoti clad old gentleman appearing in his slides as one) was called a Common Man.I wish the media, or the intellectuals of this country stop being selective in their criticism, and for once actually come down to the pedestal of a common man to see how fast a 100 rupee earned gets spent leaving a man empty handed with a head full of worries. My point : If you want to criticise, speak out against everything you see thats bad like Mr. Laxman did. If you want to be selective, better keep your mouth shut.

Scintillating cartoons on India's political history by the Master Cartoonist
A collection of cartoons is not strictly what you would call a book...BUT when these are cartoons drawn by India's best- loved cartoonist and political satirist for over six decades from the late 1940s till the present they topple any Book on India's political and economic history....What this collection does is showcase some of Laxman's most memorable cartoons and place them in a historical context, chronologically. There is a brief one line commentary accompanying every cartoon which occupies a page each. It's a running commentary on India's unfolding history over six decades since Independence (the book was first published in 2005) showcased in a most delightful, witty and engaging manner! A sure shot fun way to learn about our country's political history AND enjoy Laxman's cartoonsI think a Book like this should be made compulsory reading for every XIIth class student....maybe even replace our boring political history books (full of nonsensical grandiose biased events)

Excellent selection of cartoons
The cartoons are all good and finishing of this book is great with good printing quality but bad packaging ruined all good things about the book. Sellers should use cardboard box to deliver books as bubble wrapper isn't good in protecting the corners of book.

R K Laxman's cartoons are excellent. Except that the choice of selection for this edition is not much to write back home about. Also, the landscape is inconvenient to be accommodated in the book shelf

Great collection
Excellent book if you're interested in Indian politics. It covers all the major happenings since independence. The cartoons also come with an explanation, so you can make out the background story. Must buy for enthusiasts, and Laxman fans

Pure Laxman, Pure Gold
I grew up looking forward to the Times of India's Laxman cartoons everyday. His keen understanding of the subtlety of the political or economic situation in India in the 1970s-80s (it wasnt a good time) and yet being able to display it with light humor remains, to me, unparalleled anywhere or anytime since. (with all due respect to America's G. B. Trudeau). This collection allows to me to recollect those times, every page recalling the corruption, incompetence, and even grinding deprivation of Indian life back then (and even now) but still able to leave you with a smile so that you could go on with your day ahead. He started in 1947 and apparently continues cartooning even today - the Government awarded him the Padma Vibhushan - India's 2nd highest civilian honour in 2005, shows that even bureaucrats can occasionally know how to do something right.
