Miki Falls: Spring (Miki Falls, 1)

Great story, brilliantly executed.
Chose to give this five stars because the story is great; combined with the art it is brilliantly executed yet simply done. The art work reminds me a lot of the kind of stuff my mom learned how to draw as a cartoonist, yet with a strong manga influence. Works for me! Story wise, just kinda has that engrossing effect I suppose. By the end of Spring, my heart strings got a bit of a tug and I could see the emotion rendered on the characters face. You know that the story is great when you're hooked in. I had read a bit before dinner and gone to watch TV. It wasn't long before I came back to this because I had to know what Miki's next move would be. 3/4 of the book later, my TV is still on pause and I'm tempted to order the next volume.

Enjoyed the content and graphic art.
It was an enjoyable quick read for teens or adults. The surprising plot twist was a nice touch as well as the wonderful graphic artwork. Looking forward to reading through the series.

highly recommended!
Amazing book! The art is outstanding, and it is actually very well written! It has no profanities, suitable for children too. That doesn't make it childish however. I recommend this book to anyone! Not just to manga or graphic novel fans. I cannot wait to read the other three books in the series. After that, I will be reading 'Brody's ghost', the other series by the same author. Stellar review for Miki ^___^

Needed some editing, but still a very enjoyable read
I didn't know what to expect when I picked up this manga novel written and drawn by a fellow American. However, I just had to give it a go after watching Mark Crilley's art tutorials on YouTube and hearing all the positive feedback. Plus, I'm a huge sucker for Japanese comic books. I just wanted to see how the medium fares here.Long story short, Miki Falls is a fun and unique read, but not something everyone will enjoy.First of all, the artwork. I love it. Most manga I read tends to be inked, usually looking really splotchy, possibly due to the ink being applied to too rough of paper. Here, however, Mark relies on pencils and pencils only to make his art. Everything is clean, clear, and fun to look at. Another huge plus is the panel layout. It's not plain, but it's not complex either. Sometimes a book will have a style where the page is obliterated by oddly placed panels and characters. In Miki Falls, I never had that problem, and it held my attention throughout. The artwork is not perfect, however. Characters seem to have a nasty habit of changing their looks. At one point, their eyes seem small. The next, they're either bigger or even smaller. I even ran into a section where, at first glance, Miki's chin inflated to a size comparable to Jay Leno. That's a hyperbole, obviously, but the case here is that there's a lack of consistency, and it shows. Also, the characters are in dire need of expressions. When up close, their eyes really convey emotion, but from afar, they appear really stiff. This is a problem with the mouths, as well. There are times where characters are supposed to shout or grit their teeth, but the mouths don't change in size; they just sort of open. The skin just doesn't have that elastic feel like it can really stretch and squash. Now, for the story. I don't want to talk about it too much as I really hate spoilers and hate to give even the littlest bit to other people. All I can say is that it's one of a kind, at least in my experience, and thanks to the western comic styled narrations, you're always on the same page as Miki. Everything is understandable, easy to follow, and well paced. But here's the big problem: there's no subtlety. I'm no stranger to manga that takes place in a realistic world and then throws a few twists at you. But the reason why these stories worked was due to factors like suspense, foreshadowing, and characters reacting realistically. Here, Miki takes things in almost too easily. Not only is she very impulsive, but when she makes some kind of unworldly connection, she doesn't have any doubts. She doesn't think that it's just a coincidence, nor does she become the least bit frightened. There are some instances later on where characters like Hiro drop important plot information and twists, but it's done so bluntly. You just don't have the opportunity to accept these points, and it loses what could have been camp value and just becomes cheesy.I hate to be critical, because I really liked Miki Falls, and I'll definitely buy the sequel real soon. However, I just have to give a fair warning to everyone. This book isn't perfect, but if you can look past a few flaws, you'll really enjoy what it has to offer.

Great series, perfect for tweens!
I bought books 1 through 3 for my 10 year old daughter who has recently developed a love of manga. She has been drawing with Mark Crilley's youtube videos and reading his books was the next logical step. She finished all three books on Christmas morning! Then read them again. And again!I've read 2 of the three we have and the story is sweet and interesting. It's a love story lite, with likable characters and a good but simple plot.I'd recommend this for tweens and up.

"Fall" in love with this series!
Miki Falls is somewhat a romance novel series.I found out about this book like a lot of the over people who have reviewed it, from the authors YouTube channel. When the book first arrived I was totally happy with the front cover, which, as it is shown in the picture, is very colourful and has a beautiful illustration of the protagonist who we will be following over the series of the 4 books. The saying, 'Never judge a book by its cover' usually gets ignored by a lot of people when buying books, as the front cover is usually the main selling point of the book, and in this case, it passes with flying colours! As a 16 year old high school girl, I am finding this book very enjoyable, however, I have not yet finished it. Like everyone else has said, the illustrations inside are beautiful, and they are really able to communicate thoughts and feelings to the reader, without the need of text, which I think is very important if you are going to create a manga. I also found that the text is fairly easy to read, there are some long words here and there, but I still believe that it is suitable for people of all reading capabilities. The story its self is very good. It is able to make you build feelings with the characters in the book, and it is very tense in places, however, it also has its light-hearted pages that I found very funny. Some of my issues with this manga is that the story flows very quickly. I like manga's like Dragon Ball and things that are quite slow paced to allow room for character development and allow you to get more attached to the characters in the story. This isn't a major put-off, but like saying, it is very fast, but character development is still there.Another issue is that the book doesn't have 'chapters' its just one big long book with no breaks. This isn't too much of a problem, as you can, most of the time, clearly see where there should be a new chapter because of the change in topic, time or conversation. So this just made it a little difficult to decide if I should stop reading here, or wait and see if there is a more suitable place to rest. This is not a large issue though, and this book is great all the same.Another thing that may be worth mentioning is that it isn't read like a traditional manga, as it is read like Western books, left to right, opposing to the more common manga style of right to left. This isn't a problem or a bonus in any way, just something to be noted about :)Over all, I think Miki Falls: SPRING is a good start to the small series. Despite being a little thin in character development and story line in places, the book still counts for a good read and it will for sure keep you entertained. This manga does NOT contain any inappropriate content, so it is good for a wide range of people, I would say about 10 years+, due to the story being a little difficult to understand at times. So I think this is a great book, and I highly recommend that you give it a shot! Thank you!

First time buying product from Amazon
The product I bought was Miki Falls: Spring and I bought it because I really like the drawing style from the creator and had a peek of the story. The story seem interesting to me so I decided to buy it.This is my first time buying a product from amazon. The outcome was better than I expect, the shipment and package came to my house right on time as the estimate time had said to be. The package was fully protected my product very well. The product itself have no damage. As for the product, when I first took out from the package, the book was very good. I like the cover, it was better than I expected to be and the thickness of the book was like any normal manga. The inside of the book is black and white (paperback. At the end of the book it have writings about the author/creator (Same person).I HIGHLY recommend people buying products from Amazon and Miki Falls. The creator of this story is teaching people how to draw manga on Youtube and have Fan page on Facebook.
