Nice healthy tasty quick meal
Not a fan of the usual oats porridge in milk/water but this oats one did floor me!This time got a quick fix near traditional tasty breakfast idea from MTR - MTR Oats Idli & MTR Chutnipodi combo - thanks to some of the Amazon reviewers who have recommended this mix (btw I have voted you all up - thanks again!). MTR Chutni Podi available at -> http://www.amazon.in/MTR-Chutney-Powder-200g/dp/B009W0UTLO/ref=pd_sim_325_9?ie=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=0B6PW8YZQ84HZHV2TAHTThis Oats Idli mix is a pale yellow coloured mix of fine powdered oats mixed with mild masala, little salt, even tiny mustard seeds added.Method & Tips to make:1) Add equal quantity of curd i.e. 1cup MTR Oats Idli mix powder with 1 cup curd, blend well with a whisker or egg beater and set aside for 3mins before using the batter.2) Take an Idli Steamer (get one online if you don't have it - a standalone 2 tier Idli steamer is what I use. If you have a pressure cooker already, you can opt to just get a 2-3 tier idli steaming plates instead - make sure the plate diameter mentioned fits within the diameter of the cooker you have, leaving some gap for steam flow - better get plates from the same brand, listed to be compatible with your cooker size just to be sure), fill some water & bring it to boil.3) Meanwhile take the idli plates & use a little gingelly oil & rub the surface so as to make it easier to 'pop out' the idli once cooked. Take a small ladle, stir the batter well & pour out into the idli plate slots without overfilling beyond rim.4) Once cooker water has started boiling, place the Idli steamer plates with batter inside, close the cooker (if pressure cooker, pl don't add weight) & set the flame slightly above simmer mode. Set timer for 10mins & let the idlis get steamed well.5) Once 10mins is up, use a steel fork to poke the Oats Idlis to see if the fork returns outside without sticky or liquid batter, which is the sign that the idli is cooked through well.6) Take each plate & use a steel spoon along the sides of the idli slots to 'pop out' the cooked idlis. They should pop out easily due to the oil applied.7) Serve hot with MTR Chutney powder (mix the chutney powder with gingelly oil to the consistency you like as a side dish for Idlis). Also good with sambhar or white coconut chutney or any other fresh chutney of your choice like mint chutney, tomato chutney etc.1cup Idli mix with 1 cup curd gave me medium sized 8 Idlis and I've hardly used 1/4th of the pack. So the whole pack could make around 30+ Idlis. Some additional tips:1)Tip for tastier batter: This 1 cup curd I had taken out of fridge & left overnight in a glass container (glass being best to store curd in fridge or outside!) so that it sours a bit & adds taste to the idli & this worked well! If you don't want your idlis sour like traditional dish, you can as well add fresh curd to the mix instead.2)Tip for right batter consistency: As I overshot the 3mins (by a few hours :-), found the batter had absorbed a lot of liquid from curd & firmed up little more than usual Idli batter consistency. Idli batter has to flow thick from the ladle, not flow like dosa batter & not plop out of it too. To correct the batter to right levels, added a little water & a little salt & blended again before using it.3)Tips for alternative to curd: Those who are vegan or wants to avoid dairy for health reasons, you can replace curd with water but be very careful as whole of 1cup of water may not be required for 1cup of this mix - I am not sure as I have not yet tried it with just water added so to be on safer side, add half cup of water, keep aside for 3mins & before pouring the batter check if the consistency is of usual idli batter while pouring out from the ladle & adjust water & salt accordingly & blend well again.4)Tip to easily pop up Idlis from the hot steamer plate slots: Hold the plate inverted under water tap with flowing water cooling the slot bulges. The temperature difference between the now cooled plate & hot idli within with then make it easier to pop up the Idli with a steel spoon.Hope that helps.Have a nice healthy tasty quick meal! I had mine today & loved it:-)

A must have item in my pantry
This is my second favorite item from MTR. The idlis turn out to be soft and tasty, if you get the timing in the microwave perfect. Otherwise, they may become a little hard. If you have young always hungry children at home, make sure it is there in your pantry.

Quite good
Quite good and while the. taste is different from the real stuff, people can gradually make a change to it and won't notice it after some time. I made change to brown rice more than a decade ago and now prefer brown rice for example. My only issue with MTR products is that addition of curd is needed. I am not adding it and as a result the idli does not become fluffy. I wish some Gits like alternative are provided.I appreciate though that MTR is thinking of health-conscious people
