Great tool for helping children pay attention to their bodies and minds
I’m sure these easy-to-follow cards would be great for an older kid, but I was hesitant that they would be helpful for my five-year old son. He’s often overtired and jumpy at bedtime, so I bought these thinking I would see if any of the cards could help him pay attention to and calm his body at bedtime. He doesn’t read yet, so the cards would need to be interesting enough to pique his interest and also able to hold his attention. When the cards arrived and I showed them to my son, we looked at the instruction page together and right away he was interested in the professed benefits of the cards. We did two of the exercises at the dinner table and they were okay. But they really shone the next time he was was jumpy and kind of bouncing off the walls at bedtime. We chose the card that has you balance a stuffed animal on your stomach while you do “rock a bye” by breathing in and out.My son loved rocking his doll to sleep and it got him to quiet his body and really pay attention to the sensation. He said “I like that it’s so peaceful.” The next time I wanted to help him calm his body, we pulled out another card and were similarly successful.I appreciate that some of the cards are really meant for older kids and will look forward to using them as my son gets older. It’s also a really nice way to share a meditative or calm moment with him without actually telling him to calm down.I am not giving five stars because a bunch of the cards require props that some families may not have. That’s not a deal-breaker, but I can’t try those ideas unless I buy or fashion the props somehow (think barrel-of-monkeys figures, a woven finger trap, etc.). I can imagine they would be good activities, but I won’t know unless I buy those specific objects.
