FOUR MAJOR PLAYS OWC PB

Lorca's masterpieces in one volume
This review focuses on the edition itself rather than Lorca's plays, which I would not want to comment on here at all. They are beautiful literary works with little to compare to. The book is beautiful, the cover is pretty enticing, and the pages and print are per the standards of Oxford World's Classics. The extensive introductory essay is a cherry on the icing. A thoroughly well-executed edition.

Four very enjoyable plays
The Oxford World Classics’ “Frederico Garcia Lorca, Four Major Plays” is enjoyable. Lorca, a Spanish poet, theatre director, and playwright, was born in 1898. During the Spanish Civil War, the right-wing military assassinated him in 1936 when he was 38. He was suspected of being left-wing and disliked because he was a homosexual. He is considered one of Spain’s greatest poets. In 1928, His ”Book of Gypsy Ballads” had substantial popular success. His most famous and considered best poem is a lament he wrote when his friend, a bullfighter, was killed in 1935. He is credited for helping begin a second golden age of Spanish theater. Some of his plays contain poems and many symbols common to poets. Some critics compare him to Cervantes, the author of Don Quixote. The four plays in this volume draw on classical tragedy, as described in the book’s dozen-and-a-half-page Introduction.
