Pretty Nice!
I knew as little about wood turning as was possible when I bought my lathe. And I bought a horrible set of $25 Chinese chisels before that. I did not however, know that they were horrible at the time.I fully expect to have to put an edge on most any cutting tool, but the edges were misshapen, the tools were lightweight, and it frankly did not contain the most important tools I discovered I would need - a rough out gouge and a bowl gouge.Enter the Savannah set. These chisels are longer than the cheap set, and the steel is twice as thick. Yes, they needed a little stone work. Just be sure and spend some quality time with mineral spirits (or the solvent of your choice), to remove the varnish protecting the metal from rusting. If you try the lazy way, and only remove varnish from the cutting surfaces, the tool will drag on your tool rest. Just do it right and clean it all off.It took me three days and a number of worthless videos to gain confidence with the bowl gouge. Folks doing videos are generally not professional instructors, many dip or mumble as well.Keep a stone or grinder handy. If that baby isn't sharp, most of your efforts will go into heating the wood and the tool. When you can get a ribbon of shavings, you know you're sharp. The tools come in a decent wooden box. I just store them there to keep sawdust off them and just have one out at a time. One tool wasn't perfectly centered and looks bent, but works okay.I've ordered a high tech carbide cutter to use with these, but I plan on using these until wear out.

Overall a good mid level set of chisels
Overall these are a decent set of beginner to mid level chisels. Like many have said before they come somewhat sharp but the sharpness varies among the set. The roughing gouge was fine but the parting tool and a few others were dull.Note that there is a protective varnish which has to be removed first or they will not cut correctly.Since I bought a wolverine sharpening setup I sharpened them as I used them. Id id try most of the chisels before sharpening and like I said the Spindle gouge and roughing gouge were o.k....but the parting tool as well as one other were dull.I mostly turn green wood we cut down on our property and so far they have held up. I am not hard on tools...I keep them sharp...I pay attention to proper tool techniques and I don't see these having any issues as long as the steel holds up to proper sharpening.I will add better gouges as these either wear out or as I decide a different chisel is needed. Until then..if kept sharp and used properly they should last until my skill dictates a need for better tools.Overall a good set to start out with and practice grinding with as well as learning what works for you. No need to drop 400 big ones on a pro set until you know what your doing...kind of like the hacker on the golf course thinking he needs a set of $1200 pro clubs to improve his game..yah..no..he just sucks...with expensive clubs...:-)

Great Beginner Set
This is my first set of wood lathe tools. So far, I've been very pleased with their performance. No cracked handles and no problems with the box that the tools came in. I can confirm as some others have said that there is a thin layer of plastic on all of these tools, to protect while shipping no doubt, that needs to be removed from the cutting end once you're ready to try them out of the lathe. I've turned quite a bit of wood with them right out of the box without sharpening them at all. They've done very well, however, now, most of them are in need of sharpening. I've been using a 600 grit diamond sharpening stone to hone with. It has been working well for me, but now it's time to order a bench grinder.I believe these are the same exact tools as the PSI set, i.e., made by the same mfg. I purchased these because I live in Georgia, I like the Savannah logo printed on them, and most importantly, they were to be shipped from a store close to where I live. Otherwise, I would have just purchased the PSI set.I would definitely recommend these to the beginner and budget minded alike.

another homerun by Amazon
As usual Amazon comes through again with quick delivery and finding a good company with a good product. Chisels could have been a little more ground out of the box but they worked just fine after a little touch up on the grinder. The box they came in was a nice addition to the set of tools. The tools themselves were a fantastic set of chisels for a great, great price. Nice handles, long enough, a heavy weight that make you think you have a tool in your hand.

Definitely a beginners set!
Being new to wood turning, I was not sure of the best tools to purchase. I did not choose the cheapest and I did not choose the most expensive. I chose this set of tools. Bonus that they were made in America. They are the length that I wanted, hardened steel and wooden handle. Upon opening, these tools are not sharp enough to last more than one 30 minute session on the lathe. I had to purchase a sharpening system before I could use them a second time. I brought the tools with me so they could show me how to use their system and sharpen my tools. That was where I learned about the quality, or lack there of, in the different grades of hardened steel. For what I paid, they were fine for learning with. But here I am only a month and a half later and I need to buy better tools already. My suggestion, unless you just have the money to go all out, buy the cheapest set to learn on so it does not hurt as much a couple months later when you need to buy new ones.

Very good tools
These are the first set of lathe tools that I have purchased. I had never used a lathe before and I looked for something that seemed to be good for a beginner without breaking the bank. I feel like they are a solid tool. They have just the right amount of weight to them. The length of them feels very ergonomic as well. They are comfortable to hold and to use. They sharpen very well and hold an edge for quite a while. I couldn't be happier with these, if you are just getting started in turning, get these, I don't think you will regret it.

Not bad.
Good for the price but wouldn't buy them again.
