Bye Bye Shopkins... There's a new collection in town!
I didnt purchase from amazon, but instead from a local supermarket (at a fraction of the price amazon are charging). My 8 year old daughter is obsessed with three things: Lego, shopkins, and watching you tube videos of people opening blind bags and surprise eggs. So we have taken to buying her these blind bags/surprise eggs as little treats occasionally - this time it was for 100% attendance for this half term.We have tried several blind bags, zomlings, mash-ems, angry birds etc, but until yesterday, I had never seen or heard of Star Monsters.Daughter was, as always, delighted to be presented with a blind bag, and her reaction was "ooh these are going to be bigger than shopkins and moshis mum, all my friends are talking about them".Anyway, inside are 2 little monsters, and 2 stickers. The monsters are about the same size as shopkins, fairly sturdy, and the usual garish colours, and plastic feel. The stickers are, well stickers, and the 2 monsters she got in her pack, were not the same as the 2 on the stickers.Apparently, these star monsters have four groups ? 72 individual monsters to collect in series 1, but each monster can be found in 3 or 4 different colours. There are also 5 levels of rarity to them - essential (common), fusion (two monsters mixed together) evolution (an evolved variation of one of the 72 common monsters) rare silver, and ultra rare gold. And the very best thing (according to my plastic-tat-expert-daughter ) is that you can play several games with them! But apparently she needs to get the starter pack (book?) for the instructions on the games. I am not convinced these so called games will be up to much, as the moulded figures aren't posable, and don't actually do anything, but I am sure we will soon find out, as daddy has already promised to get it for her when she passes her skating exam at the weekend (hows that for motivation?!).I can see that these Star monsters will indeed be the next craze. Like Moshi monsters, and shopkins, they are of an addicting nature to children who like to collect. Personally, I am happy for our kids to collect such things, they are fairly cheap, and dont take up much room (unlike the lego that seems to have taken over the whole of our dining room, and a good chunk of our wages in the run up to any birthday or Christmas!).Like any collection, this could get expensive if you let it, especially with so many variations of each of the 72 figures in this first wave alone. But I think if your child is happy to just collect/play with them, without actually needing or wanting to collect them ALL, then these star monsters should prove an affordable hit with children, and parents.
