Strong AC battery, weak solar generator, and a very nosy app
I bought the Jackery 2000 Plus with the two 100W panels specifically because I wanted a solar backup system, not just a big orange battery I plug into the wall. After living with it a while, here’s the honest rundown.1. Solar performance: works only in “lab conditions”The AC side works fine:* Charges from the wall like it should* Runs AC loads with no obvious problemThe issue is the "solar" input. In my usage, the panels only produce meaningful charge when they are in perfect, full, direct midday sun, aimed just right, with no shade and no clouds. Anything less:* Morning or late afternoon sun* Light cloud cover* Partial shade* Imperfect angle…and the charging becomes almost useless, or the Jackery barely shows any input at all.For something sold as a "solar generator", that’s a big disappointment. In real-world conditions, the solar side feels more like a fragile, occasional bonus than a dependable feature. I’ve ended up treating this as an AC-powered backup battery that just happens to come with fussy panels.2. The Jackery App and privacy: your Wi-Fi password goes to their cloudTo use the “smart” features and remote monitoring, you’re pushed toward installing the Jackery app and connecting the unit over Wi-Fi.If you take the time to read their own Jackery App privacy policy, it very plainly says the app collects and stores your "Wi-Fi SSID and Wi-Fi password" in their cloud (“Data 7” in their table), and that they transfer personal information internationally, including to servers in "China".I’m not thrilled with the idea that my home network name and password are stored in a vendor’s cloud and potentially moved across borders, so I basically decided: "no app, no cloud connection". That also means I’m not getting the full feature set I technically paid for.3. Customer support and return experienceI spent a lot of time emailing back and forth with Jackery support about the weak solar performance. To their credit, they did walk me through troubleshooting and even offered a partial refund at one point because I was outside the standard 30-day window. The problem is that the terms kept shifting:* One support person said I could get a "95% refund" and "wouldn’t have to pay shipping" because it was a valid functional issue.* Later, another person said that on top of the 5% they’d keep, they "would also deduct shipping and handling" from the refund, for a very heavy and bulky unit.By the time you subtract 5% plus whatever they decide “shipping & handling” is for a ~50 lb setup, plus the hassle of boxing it all up, the “refund” stopped looking very attractive. I ultimately gave up on the return and kept everything, which should tell you how much time and energy this process had already eaten.4. Bottom linePros:* As an AC-charged backup battery, the 2000 Plus itself is fine.* It can definitely be useful for short power outages if you treat it like a big UPS.Cons:* Solar performance in normal, less-than-perfect conditions is very underwhelming.* The Jackery app’s privacy posture (collecting and storing Wi-Fi SSID/password in the cloud, with data transfers including China) is a major turn-off for me.* Support/return terms were inconsistent and felt like they moved the goalposts mid-conversation.If you just want a big AC-charged battery and don’t care about the app or privacy, you might be satisfied. But if you’re buying this as a serious solar solution and you’re at all cautious about what happens to your home network credentials and personal data, go in with your eyes open. This did not deliver what I expected for the price.
