The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: The Secondary Phase (Dramatized)

Better Than Dinner at Milliways
This is the second of the first two radio series, or phases, which went on air in 1980. The first series had been adapted into a book and shortly after broadcast of the Secondary Phase it was also adapted into a book. For me the first two phases represent the very best, most engaging part of the grand story. They are the only ones with Peter Jones as The Book. For me his voice captures the description: large friendly letters. When I hear his voice I think, “There's a frood who really knows where his towel is.”After the broadcast of the Secondary Phase there was a break in producing new radio broadcasts. Douglas Adams continued on writing new stories but the next installment was not broadcast until 2004, after the deaths of both Peter Jones and Douglas Adams.I am so glad Amazon has the entire collection and are even going to offer the new for 2018 finale: Hexagonal Phase. Luckily for us the actors who have been playing Arthur, Ford and Zaphod remain the same, or so I have been told. This grand work by Douglas Adams is hilarious, witty and very smart. I am so happy I can hear it all again.

The original.
I heard this on the radio when it first came out. It was from the BBC which had a tradition of being more free thinking than others in what they would let on the air. Adams, as he gained fame, seemed to shirk away from some of the original material, so it is important to get these original BBC broadcasts. I saw the 2005 movie in the theater and thought it stank. Remember: Anyone with ego enough to get elected should by no means be allowed to rule.

Excellent Audio Quality - But Episodes (CDs) In Wrong Sequence
Took me a bit to sort this out after listening to all three CDs as the story line made no sense at the end of the 3rd CD. The Secondary Phase consists of six episodes (Fits 7th - 12th). Two episodes are on each of the CDs which are labeled 1, 2 and 3 (of 3). The 2nd and 3rd CDs are out of sequence. CD #2 contains the last two episodes and CD #3 contains the middle two episodes. Change the order of the CDs to 1 - 3 - 2, and the episodes are in the proper order. Verified this with Wikipedia synopses of the Secondary Phase episodes. Note that this defect may only be in a production lot (batch) and not all. The 9th episode begins with a short recap followed by Ford, Arthur and Zaphod in conversations with each other on board the Heart of Gold (spacecraft). The 11th episode begins with a recap followed by a conversation between Arthur Dent and Lentila (female archaeologist) on the surface of the planet.Excellent restoration and transfer of original audio to CD. Nicely divided into 10-12 tracks per episode for playing convenience allowing skipping through to specific scenes like one would with Scenes on a DVD or Blu-ray movie. Join episode tracks together when importing into iTunes library to store as complete episodes.Deducted a star for the CD/episode sequence issue (on the one I received) - but only one given the excellent audio restoration of a radio program recorded nearly 35 years ago.

... part collection to CD format and I am quite happy to have it
I ordered this H2G2 CD version to complete my conversion of my Hitchhiker's 5 part collection to CD format and I am quite happy to have it, now. Douglas Adams' hilarious, yet amazingly profound adventure is an eternal classic at this point, 35 years after its first publication.... and Secondary Phase is an integral part of it....It is in perfect condition, arrived very soon after my order was placed and I, obviously, am delighted to have and listen to it! 5 Stars, for sure! If you have any kind of imagination you will love this CD
Classic story I never get tired of hearing. If you like British humor or you just like good story telling, your going to love the hitch hikers guide to the galaxy. The first time I heard it was in the 80's on cassette tapes. It is great to have it now on CD. Hearing the story is much better than watching the movie which was limited due to time restraints.

needed by fans for the Bird People story
This is the second BBC radio play which differs from the novels. The events are in a different order and a whole section about the Bird People and an evil Shoe company appears nowhere else in HHGTTG but here. That makes it a must for fans not wanting the other phases of the radio version. I think radio was the best medium for this concept.

My favorite series. The secondary radio phase is the only ...
My favorite series. The secondary radio phase is the only version with multiple clones and anti-clones; it is really an interesting addition to the Hitchhiker's Guide compendium. The book does not include them, nor does the TV series nor the movie. Don't miss this portion of the incredible Hitchhiker's series.

I love the original tv series
Okay. I have the primary phase, the secondary phase, and tertiary phase. On cd I have the tertiary, quandary phase, and the quintessential phase. I have all the books, and the movie made in 2005. I love the original tv series, and Adams is one of my favorite authors. He is even quoted in Richard Dawkins “The God Delusion.” Adams is one of my favorite people, and I am sorry he is no longer with us. That being said I was sorry to have given this price only a three star rating. I like parts of this story but it just feels disjointed. I like the idea posted later, that this was just one alternate universe and the tertiary phase pretty much ignores this one. Trillian isn’t even in these stories. It was a real odd one, but still good and worth buying. I just don’t like how self aware this one is, and while that worked with the primary phase this takes it too far. I also have to say the ending in this one is never concluded. I don’t like that at all. Other than those comments this is a good series.

Hitch Hiker's Guide To The Galaxy: Secondary Phase - Oh Belgium man, BELGIUM!
In this, the second instalment of Douglas Adams' Hitch Hiker's Guide To The Galaxy, we are treated to more insane, inane, whacky and downright wierd adventures of Arthur Dent, Ford Prefect, Zaphod Beeblebrox and Marvin the paranoid android. Ford and Arthur need to find a way off prehistoric earth by flagging down an only partially existant spaceship, while Zaphod receives a message from himself in a dream and setsoff ona crazy quest to find some cat named Zarniwoop. As they cross time and space on a highly improbable (but not impossible) journey, they go through mind boggling adventures and discover 15 mile high statues of themselves and the reason for birds. Not as hysterically funny as the first series there is still more than enough humour here to keep you laughing, and some very good plot devices. Aided by great performances from the cast, this is a treat and an essential listen to those who want to know what happens to Arthur and Co after being stranded on prehistoric earth. This CD release from the BBC is excellent, with a great sound quality far superior to my old somewhat muddy copy. Two episodes per disc on 3 discs, held in a double jewel case. It's a classic, and has been given the decent release it deserves. 5 stars.
