Can anyone recommend a battery bank that's confirmed to work with 24w of power?

You could use just about any 12V lead-acid gel cell with this iron and get a decent amount of run time. A healthy 4 amp-hour lead acid battery, starting with a full charge, should be able to run for over an hour without getting excessively discharged. (You don't want a 12V lead-acid battery to discharge below around 10.2V minimum. It's bad for the cells.) Nickel Metal Hydride batteries are also good power sources for this sort of application but you'd have to build your own stack from D-cells (it would take 10 batteries in series to give you a 13.5V pack). Chargers are a bit harder to find for large cells of this type, particularly when they're in a pack. Nickel Metal Hydride batteries are less sensitive about being heavily discharged than are lead-acid types. Lithium-ion batteries have the best energy to weight characteristics around but they are dangerous to build your own packs from unless you know how to charge and balance the cells. Best just stick to a small lead acid pack of 4 to 6 a-hr capacity and get an appropriate charger to go with that.
