Rich storytelling worth revisiting
I've read this book several times over the years, and like all very good books, it strikes me in a new and different way each time. And yet, it is consistent in the way it remains bittersweet as I revisit my childhood self and am filled with the same flavor of emotions each time I read a few key scenes.Nostalgia aside, this storytelling is beautiful and rich and somehow more wonderful because of its literary restraint. Children and adults alike can learn a lot about writing from studying this approachable story. For parents and educators, there are a couple uses of moderate swear words, and instances of perilous suspense. It is quite mild compared to what many children are consuming these days, but consideration for your particular child's needs is still warranted. There is wonderful character growth for nearly every character in this book without it feeling too Pollyanna-ish. I'd forgotten how much I like such deliberate plotting and pacing in a story!Overall, I'm delighted to find that this book has aged another decade with me and yet continues to be a very satisfying read.

A lovely story
This is a great story about the struggles of entering a society that is completely different from what you were raised in. Kit was raised in Barbados by her grandfather where she had slaves and was taught to read and write and swim. By everything changes and she ends up in New England with her aunt and uncle and two cousins that are Puritans. Kit quickly learns that in this land, you work from sun up to sun down. When she befriends Hannah, the local outcast whom is Quaker, trouble starts brewing. The struggles of a young woman during this time period was fascinating to read about. Highly recommend

Puritanical New England in the past
An interesting story that touches on slavery and witchcraft themes with innocent romance, too.

Thoroughly enjoyed this story!!
I was introduced to this story through the book Awkward in October by Yea. That book was written with The Witch of Blackbird Pond as the center of the main characters decisions in life. So…I HAD to read this book!!I am so happy that I decided to read this! I’m not usually a big historical fiction reader. But this book was so good, filled with lots of interesting characters!!Growing up in New England, Massachusetts specifically, I was taught about the Puritans and the Quakers. The Puritans were very strict people, who lived very hard lives. They wanted to reform the Church of England, and had to leave for the new world (America) to escape persecution. They disliked any who didn’t conform with their religious ideals and considered them followers of the devil. That is where the Salem witch trials came to be. The Quakers, who also left the Church of England, had their own beliefs and didn’t fall in line with the Puritans beliefs, came to be accused of devil worship and witchcraft. That’s where this book comes in.Katherine, also known as Kit, came from Barbados. She lived in Barbados with her grandfather until he died and she set sail on ‘The Dolphin’ for Connecticut, where her Aunt (a puritan) lived. On board she met the Captain’s son, Nat, who she develops a friendship with. And that’s where I will end this…so as not to give anything away.I really enjoyed this book, and would definitely reread it. If you enjoy historical fiction, family, friendships, and a little romance, give this book a try!

A comfortable read
A bit of history, a bit of drama, a bit of family and love as well as a shout out to early teachers all make up this pleasant read of early times in the colony of Connecticut. Reminiscent of some of the Amish novels set during the founding of America. A truly comforting read with a warm beverage of your choice.

Surprisingly Adventurous!
My 10 yr old and I are both enjoying this book. So far, she has made it to Chapter 9, and she loves it. There are some complex issues that parents will need to discuss and maybe explain to children under 12 yrs. I like how the writer represents people on opposite sides of the fence. The only thing I didn't like, is how again, a minority group is portrayed as a slave or servant only...regardless of the timeframe. It is a historical fact that there were people from many tribes in Africa kidnapped (parents and children divided, many died on ships) due to greed and pure vanity of true barbarics! Some of those kidnapped men and women, along with their children were princes and princesses in their homeland. Royalty or not, very few of people were returned to their home once this knowledge became clear. Every person deserves freedom and equality, the right to live peacefully and make their own choices, including the main character of the book. I hope that children and parents reading this book will highlight these points and how important it is to respect all people! The sun rises and sets on every person. If a meteor or some disaster occurred that wrecked our world, it would not spare a single person based on national origin. Seriously! I did appreciate the writer's efforts to point out the families who were against slavery. I know this is a lot, but as a student of History; Ancient and Modern, these things stick out when I read anything. My words are nothing personal towards any group. Instead, I am reminding parents of opportunities they have to help their children development into thinking, feeling, caring individuals who will become adults and contribute to making our world a much better place for everyone! Thanks for listening!

OK but not great
They breath well and feel nice but much to short for me. If you like short and thin socks you will like them. Just not my preference.
