Watch collector ... Why I like this watch
I collect watches. It has been an interest of mine since my first one - Seiko's first dive watch, the 62 MAS introduced in 1965.I've bought several Revue Thommen watches over the years, mostly for gifts. Pictured above, next to this watch, is a Revue Thommen about twenty years old. It has never been serviced, it looks like new, and still keeps time perfectly. The notion that an automatic watch must be serviced regularly is a myth ... I have more than a 100 that have never been serviced, including a Renis that is 64 years old.I bought this particular RT, and the GMT that is also pictured, primarily because they are old stock, driven by ETA movements, the ETA 2824 and 2893 respectively ... notice the 25 Jewel annotation on the dial. The Sellita driven ETA clone used by the newer RT watches have 26 Jewels. There is nothing wrong with Sellita, I have several watches with that movement, but the ETA has always been the gold standard to me.This rose gold RT runs at about +3 seconds a day, which is about as good as it gets with mechanical watches. It is ironic that ANY $5 quartz Barbie watch keeps time better than a Rolex that costs as much as a house, but most who collect watches see nothing artistic in a cheap circuit board. This watch has all the features we look for ... sapphire crystal, screw in case back, screw down crown, etc., and it is "Swiss Made" which generally says something about Quality Control.. The fit and finish of this watch is excellent, although the lume could be better. If you're out and about at "Zero Dark Thirty," the lume dies off, which is the case with almost all watches that do not have Tritium Tubes. The watch as pictured is as received. The strap is very nice but I use deployment clasps on all my strap watches (straps last forever with deployment clasps). The dealer, Perfect Timing, was excellent to deal with. The watch came securely packaged in two days and they were readily available to respond to my inquiry asking for verification that this is ETA driven, which was immediately verifiable with the GMT once I had the watch in hand, since the GMT has a display case back.I'm not going to get into the politics of luxury watches except to say that watches are much like wine ... there is no, "you get what you pay for." Personally, I like "value" on the wrist, as opposed to paying for marketing and price controls ... if you are going to shop luxury watches, you might want to read up on the government's terribly unsuccessful efforts (since 1960) to address that nonsense.
