Dark political book. Good read
This was a cool book. Super powered mutants are on the rise so the government forms there own superhuman team. Nick Fury gathers them. They have the Wasp , Giant Man, Iron Man and they want Bruce Banner to get them another supersoilder if he can. They find Captain America frozen in the sea and he has not aged. They also want Thor but he is some kind of hippie pacifist. Banner has been demoted because of going crazy as the Hulk before. Banner is a straight up wimp. Everyone pushes him around. He then mixes the super soldier serum with his Hulk genes and becomes the Hulk. The team has to them fight and stop him. He kills over 300 innocent people and what to rape Banner girlfriend. He also wants to eat people. Team stops him and locks Banner up and the government covers it up. This book also shows Hank Pym aka giant man abusing his wife the Wasp. Beats her up by having his ants attack her. Brutal. Captian America goes after him and beats him up. Hawkeye and Black Widow join the team as well as mutants Quicksilver and Scarlett Witch. The latter do nothing at all. The real enemy are shapshifting aliens who were around during World War War II. The team has to fight them before they blow up the Earth. They even have to free the Hulk to help them. This is mostly a political book. Wasp leaves Hank and starts liking Cap at the end of the story. You also find out that Iron Man has a health crisis. These heroes are really flawed but interesting

Fantastic real world interpretation of the Avengers. Gorgeous art! (Not for young kids)
It's the most realistic interpretation of the AVENGERS as actual human beings in both behavior and art as you will ever get. Mark Millar and Bryan Hitch laid the ground work that really allowed for the Marvel Cinematic Universe to exist. This goes into even darker and grittier areas than the movies will ever dare to tread and in my opinion is the definitive depiction of Captain America as the ultimate American cowboy and introduces us to the first iteration of Tony Stark as the hedonistic wise ass billionaire that Robert Downy Jr would soon embody on screen. While there have always been enjoyable stories featuring these characters they were never, until this series, presented with such realistic character traits. Captain America was largely a milquetoast, boy scout. Bruce Banner was a dedicated and brilliant scientist but a generic wall flower. And the most interesting thing about Tony Stark was his bout with alcoholism in the 80's.Millar and Hitch presented the first real, real world interpretation of these character types and told a story that kept escalating and kept you wondering what might be real and what might not.

If You’re a Marvel Fan You Will Love it!
I really loved this first volume. It was a very interesting take on the Avengers. I like the story arcs of Cap and Wasp. It was a good insight into an alternate version of Thor. Just something about the way this one was written makes me want to go out and buy the rest of them!! Very highly recommend this.

The Ultimates: Ultimate Collection, Vol. 1 Review
I heard a lot of good things for this book, but I never thought it was going to be THIS good!!This is not the usual Avengers. This is a more "grounded in reality" story. A lot of reactions and politics and points of view are what it would be if the story happen in the real world. That makes it sweeter.I won't give you spoilers of any kind, but I gotta say... I love the opening sequence in World War II. It looks so... wel done! Is almost cinematic. The writing is clever, and the art is awesome. Is a no brainer for a Marvel and non-Marvel fan. No necessary knolodge of past continuity is needed, which is perfect for me.My only regret: Not being able to get The Ultimates Omnibus. If that book goes into reprint, it will be mine!!!!

More Action Packed than the Movie
I recently saw the Avengers movie. To me it was a wonderful example of super hero cinema at its finest. I've been on a Trade Paperback tear lately and decided to pick up the Ultimates and The Ultimates 2: Ultimate Collection . I couldn't put them down and finished both books in two days. The reason I bring up the movie is that even though it lacked the advantage of motion and audio, the Ultimates felt more dynamic than the movie, strange as that may sound. The writing is excellent and the artwork is as well. If you're a fan of the Avengers, this book belongs on your shelf!

Perfect gift for the new comic book reader
If you know some one that likes marvel super heroes they will love this trade paper back. This is an awesome introduction book to the new revamped 2000 marvel universe. I've probably read this 10 times and will probably read it again. This trade paper back is just so good that it makes you wonder why the avengers movie wasn't just torn from these pages exactly. The book arrived exactly how it was described and it was on time.

Not the best experience.
This is an excellent collection of the Ultimates, the artwork is great, the story is pretty compelling and the design of the characters is top knotch. The only problem was whoever packaged my copy of the book at Amazon didn't put it in plastic and unfortunately it was raining on the day of delivery, so the bottom of the box soaked thru and damaged the book. Coupled with this, I called Amazon and they weren't very interested in rectifying the situation. So the book is great, the way it was packed at Amazon, not so much.

Awesome. Simply awesome.
I know this is a short review but this book is great. Set in the Ultimate universe rather than the normal Marvel 616, this is a great re-imagining of The Avengers, warts and all. It's already shown that the new Avengers movie, due next year, has taken design cues from this book rather than the regular Avengers book which is no bad thing at all.Get it. Love it.

Marvel comics don't get better than this
The Ultimates brings The Avengers (Iron Man, Captain America, Hulk and Thor) to the Ultimate Marvel universe and the result is one of the best titles Marvel have ever published in my opinion. This book reboots the Avengers and starts right from the beginning, so no knowledge of the original Marvel universe is needed. What Mark Millar and Bryan Hitch have achieved here is really quite awesome, reading like a big-budget Hollywood movie. The characters and plot are grounded in real world settings and much more believable than the original Avengers. Yes, its a story about super heroes who dress up in crazy costumes but none the less it has a realistic, gritty quality which is quite amazing considering the subject. Millar has managed to give the characters real depth and Hitch's artwork has a photo-realistic quality rarely seen in comics.Whether you are already a fan of Marvel or you're someone looking to try comics for the first time then you really can't do much better than this.Brilliant.

Great!
What actually makes this Avengers' series interesting is the mere manifestation of the avengers as superheroes with real everyday life problems. The storyline is well written and artwork is amazing. Recommended!
