what kind of brush to apply evenly & will the leather need something applied before for better coverage if the leather is porous?

To provide a smooth finish, I find that those foam brushes, usually sold at the Crafts stores, work the best. Also, to provide a better application, clean the leather with a cotton ball and rubbing alcohol. Let it dry at 2 hours before applying paint.

Will this work on synthetic leather dress shoes?

Not sure but even on leather after one wear you have to reapply especially if you are changing the color of the shoes !
