Train Whistle for Story Time
I use this train whistle to call children to story time at the library. I have had to replace my train whistles several times over the past 12 years, but this whistle will likely take me to retirement. It has a very clear, crisp sound that carries well. It fits in my pocket so the curious cannot "try" it - (how I lost two of my whistles). The construction style makes the whistle all of a piece, and it is made of wood, so there is no chance of breaking off the top, (how I lost two plastic whistles.) Overall, a very good tool at a very reasonable price.

The hard-to-find old fashion kind of train whistle!
All the train whistles we had as kids and my own children had were like this, yet this shape has become very hard to find. This is easy and fun for my grandson (age 1 1/2) to play and has a good sound. Nice quality!

Better design for smaller kids...
I had a four-barrel wood whistle as a youngster, and now that our 2½ year old is into trains, I've been eyeballing a wooden whistle for him. The problem was the standard "square" style whistles I was accustom to appeared to be too big for his mouth, not to mention excessively large and potentially breakable where the mouthpiece is carved away from the "block" of the whistle. So finding this was a happy occasion. It's certainly smaller than the wooden train whistles I'm familiar with. Its wedge-like rectangular mouth piece is still a bit large for our son's mouth, but he struggles to make it fit. The blowing part he doesn't entirely grasp -- sometimes, he tries to whistle into it, though he's gradually getting better with it.From an annoyance standpoint, it's not so loud. Quieter, I'm pretty sure, than the traditional square-type whistles, though it's hard to gauge with a 2-year old's limited lung capacity. But this whistle also lacks some of the deep tonal qualities I'm accustom to: it's a bit shrill and therefore lacking that real train sound. It's a compromise, I'm sure, between small size and sound quality. And you know what? My son doesn't seem to notice nor care. For a younger child, this is an appropriate whistle. For an older child, I suggest looking to a traditional square style, unless pocketability is of primary importance.

Bait and Switch!
I ordered 15 of these whistles for my son's fifth birthday party. Like others, I was impressed by the size, design, and quality of these whistles, so I was willing to pay a lot more to get them. However, when they arrived, I got 9 of the whistles as pictured, and 6 that were a completely different whistle, only about an inch and a half long! There was no explanation for the switch, and it has left me scrambling to get appropriate matching favors for all of the kids. Amazon gave me a refund for the six wrong ones and told me to reorder, but I was again provided with the six tiny whistles, which are literally nothing like what is pictured. Terrible experience, and still without matching whistles.

Similar..
I purchased an inexpensive train whistle a few weeks ago, and it turned out to be a poor reproduction. The Old Time Train Whistle sounds very similar to an actual train whistle. A very good reproduction, coming from a wooden toy whistle. Would make an excellent educational toy for a child.

Great product!
Great product. It is as advertised. The whistle sounds like a locomotive horn. No harsh or high pitch notes, and easy to play. It is all in the wood!
