Is It Me or My Hormones?: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly about PMS, Perimenopause, and all the Crazy Things that Occur with Hormone Imbalance

Worth reading
Thought provoking book, easy to read, comprehensive. I liked that recipes, shopping lists, and online resources were provided. A 28 Day Plan is presented but the author presents an alternative approach with permission to do what works for you if you can't or don't want to buy into the 28 Day Plan. Personally, I'm not comfortable taking so many supplements without supervision but am making many of the other changes. It's not an all or nothing approach and includes recipes with easy to find ingredients as well as lists of things to add and avoid in your diet and home - things like cleaning and personal care products. It's a sensible approach in an understandable format, whether you agree with the concepts or not.

Lots of interesting information
I saw a show with Marcelle on TV and decided to buy the book for more information. It was an easy read with good information. I even tried a couple of recipes. The only thing I wish she added - an explanation on why she recommends the specific supplements and vitamins.Overall, I recommend this book.

More than I was looking for
I wanted a book that could breakdown what hormones are, what they do and how to balance them. Well I got that and more. Marcelle Pick adds information about what tests to ask your doctor to perform, why hormones go out of balance, what can happen to a woman's body when those hormones are not balanced, and information on how to balance them. As an added bonus she gives an eating plan with recipes in the back of the book (I haven't had an opportunity to try her recipes). If you have hormone issues, I highly recommend purchasing this book.

24 Day Plan Nowhere to be found
I thought the crux of the book was good, but all throughout Pick kept referring to her 28 Day Plan, saying it can be found at her website as well as saying it would be at the end of the DVD. Well, I searched for it all over her website and it was nowhere to be found. I emailed her several times asking about it, and never got a response. So don't tout a special diet plan you have no plans to share. Very disappointed about this.

You're not alone
I read this book in 1 day. I highlighted/bent pages/took notes and cross referenced on Web MD. Most of what the book suggests is totally right. It probably All is, but when a site advises not to take something because of insufficient data I listen. Needless to say this book helped me oodles!!!

Well Written Reference and Advice for Women's Hormone Issues
Now that I'm a little past menopause, I'm still in the tweaking stage for hormone therapy. I usually reference questions I have here when I don't want to call my doctor's office with the "little things". Marcelle Pick's book is so handy and has some good information from a fellow female who happens to be a physician! And, her book is encouraging and uplifting too.

A bit of informative with a dash of impractical
I've been suffering with PMS for years, which caused me to branch out and purchase this book. I was somewhat reluctant to purchase it as even in the great reviews I read, I saw no mention of women actually utilizing her plan nor touting success based on the plan. I read the beginning chapters and after a few mentions of her 28 day plan, I flipped to the back to review this diet/food plan. I was actually disappointed to see that nearly half the book was a list of foods. Grocery lists for 1 week were overwhelming just to look at. Both the foods and lists seem impractical on multiple levels (i.e. financially, hardly any carbs, time consuming). As a mom of 3 young children, I'm lucky to cook at all much less sifting through a complicated list of organic and other foods then preparing them. I don't have that amount of time to shop nor cook most days (I do cook though...quick and healthy meals). Although I do believe to a certain extent the notion of "you are what you eat," I think this book makes recs in the extreme. How many of us for any extended period are going to fore go carbs and caffeine? While I believe there is merit in eating organically, there are also arguments that say it may not be that great as people get sick from not eating foods that use pesticides (sickness related to bugs or worms I believe). I have no doubt my eating habits could be improved, but I personally lost a lot of weight (and kept it off aside from times of pregnancy) for years eating low fat, mainly carbohydrate meals. I mention this because she says people will lose weight with this plan too. It is not good for one's energy to not eat carbs hence why the fad of Atkins and other low carb diets have faded and over time failed. The very long list of supplements one should take seems almost ridiculous. It is like one would trade multiple pills and not very attractive food choices (IMO) for not having as bad of PMS symptoms...meaning trading a lemon for a lemon unless your body makeup and or preferences lend towards these foods anyway. So why any stars?: I appreciate reading various perspectives and combining to formulate my own plan. The major thing I got from this book is more of a definition of how hormones work and what tests I should be asking for at my next gyn appt. Although, I highly doubt I'll do her plan, it has encouraged me to reevaluate what I eat during that time of the month and maybe incorporate more veggies and more insulin and mood friendly foods. I do appreciate that the author seems like she is genuinely interested in helping women from a holistic perspective, but I think to improve upon this she must consider that many of us of PMS age are moms of young children who lead very busy lives. I would have liked to see maybe a variety of plans to suit different lifestyles. No sugar (yes she says NO sugar, no caffeine (aside from green tea), barely any carbs (my body would starve) and mostly organic isn't very doable nor desirable for me.
