This instructional guide is effective and clear. It will be useful for anyone who is true in their aim to practice meditation. That is, not so that they can say to their fellow soccer moms or stinky male yogis that they are "meditating," but because they actually wish to meditate. The techniques work, but they require practice. Just reading the book won't do it -- that would be like saying you could go to Juilliard once having read a book on how to play classical cello. That said, it is the best guide I have found to date.

An excellent introductory book. This was my first book of reference when I first started doing meditation. I recommend it highly.

Practical and Inspiring
If you practice Raja Yoga and enjoy meditating on energy centers to raise your kundalini, then you will find some very interesting information that I have not read in any other book.

Instructions for meditation
These are methods of meditation as taught by monastic disciples of Sri Ramakrishna (1836- 1886). Nearly all this material (5 chapters, 161 pages) appeared in Vedanta for East and West journal published by the Ramakrishna Vedanta Centre in London, England. These are actual instructions for meditation with Sanskrit terms. The 2nd chapter is traditional Raja Yoga according to Patanjali. The Tantric method and Jnana Yoga are also discussed. These are all from the Advaita point of view. Highly readable originally published in 1972. Three page bibliography and index. The authors are Swami Ashokananda, Swami Ghanananda, and Swami Gnaneswarananda.

This book is very easy to grasp and very clear on the goals
I was lucky to stumble across this book while traveling in India. This book is very easy to grasp and very clear on the goals, science, and practice of meditation. You do not need to be a yogi, spiritual practitioner, or even a monk to benefit from this book. Simply put it is for everybody.

Short review, excellent tips!!
Truly a meditation guide!! Those who are acquainted with Kundalini Chakra system, they will get a perfect guided meditation in the article "Lessons in meditation", which is extremely self-motivating. Other articles are focused on the needs for meditation preliminaries for beginners. If you want to read this book just to relax your mind, this is not for you, but for a beginner in meditation, this is a great guide.
