Historic Live Event From 1987!
Okay, so Bob Dylan has been backed up by other bands before-The Paul Butterfield Blues Band[Newport '65]; The Hawks/The Band['65-'66 World Tour & The '74 North American Tour]; Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers[The True Confessions World Tour'86-'87]. But in the summer of 1987, Bob Dylan did a 7-city stadium tour with The Grateful Dead which made history documented for this 1989 release. Weeks before I had witnessed Dylan with T.P. & The Heartbreakers at the Brendan Byrne Arena in East Rutherford, NJ, they also shared a bill with the Dead at RFK Stadium in D.C. before Jerry Garcia went into a diabetic coma which put the Dead out of action for about 4 months touring-wise.I originally got this on vinyl when first released in '89 to make up for not catching Dylan & The Dead live in concert. My only beef about this live set was that they should have had more material from that tour. Since this is all Dylan originals here, the Dead provide great background to his music instrumentally and vocally. I heard there was a great version of "Tomorrow Is A Long Time" where Garcia supplies pedal-steel guitar, too bad they didn't include that on here. They even did a cover of Paul Simon's "The Boy In The Bubble", that would have been worth hearing, too.Out of the seven songs featured here we got four of '70s Dylan and just three of '60s Dylan. First of all, we got a pair of sermonettes, "Slow Train" and "Gotta Serve Somebody"[from the 1979 album Slow Train Coming] with the Blonde On Blonde classic "I Want You" sandwiched between the two songs. This follows with "Queen Jane Approximately"[from 1965's Highway 61 Revisited] which sums up the first side from the vinyl point of view. The epic classic from Desire "Joey" kicks off the second part. "All Along The Watchtower" gives Garcia to show his chops but couldn't match the Jimi Hendrix cover from '68. Although this set concludes with "Knocking On Heaven's Door", it slightly shows Dylan at his weakest moment vocally despite the Dead's vocalizing background. Therefore, you could say this live set is a souvenir of that brief tour for those who were there to witness it and for those that weren't there[myself included]. Regardless, it's a nice live set although there couldn't have been more unlike the Dead who already have tons of live stuff out than any other artist or group for that matter. So if you enjoy both Bob Dylan and The Grateful Dead, I recommend this disc for sure.

The Ragged Glory of Dylan and the Dead
There is a lot to like and a bit to dislike about this meeting of the 60s counterculture giants. First, let's ease the expectations. As much as we would like it to be, it's not some great cosmic melding of awesomeness that (should have) resulted in mind-blowing music. From the liner notes, I get the impression that Dylan basically showed up and performed with the Dead. The Dead's organization ran the tour. Jerry Garcia co-produced this album. Seems Bob didn't have much to do with it after the tour was over. But that's Bob.Yes, it gets a little ragged in spots, especially the opening Slow Train, which sounds like it might jump the rails any minute. Things tighten up on I Want You and Gotta Serve Somebody, and pretty much stay the course from that point on. Let's face it - ragged glory is what the Dead and Dylan are all about anyway. If you want polished, listen to Beyonce or something. What I particularly like about this (too) short album is that four of the songs don't appear on any other Dylan live release, and yes there have been many. Live versions of Slow Train, Gotta Serve Somebody, Queen Jane Approximately, and Joey, appear here for the first and only time. Since I am (one of the few) fans of Bob's Christian period, I'm very happy to get two live performances of songs from that era.You can find this pretty cheap out there, without naming names, at less than $5.00. I like it. I listen to it. Plus the Rick Griffin designed cover is the coolest album cover ever.

Dylan live!
Great album for Dylan fans, not a Dead album. This album gets a lot of hate but I think bc people want more Dead. They are the backing band. This s a Dylan record. If you are a Dylan fan and want some good live 80s Dylan get this record

Interesting variations on recognized classics
Yes it's brief, but no stoned out 60's re-work, here; by and large, well planned, rehearsed, and executed. The set has several things going for it. First, the eclectic selection is an interesting cross section of BD's compositions; second, the musicianship is solid intelligently arranged play to the strengths of both BD and the GD; third, sound quality is very good and well balanced across all the artists. As both a long standing collector of high quality, masterpiece, BD and GD material, I was way too skeptical of the overriding negative reviews; very glad I thought for myself. Vintage, but with style. Uncork and enjoy!!

Living Dead
I'm a total sucker for live albums. So when i came across this one I had to get it. I'll be honest here I'm not very familiar with music from The Dead but what is showcased here is some very nice jams. I would recommend this one for sure!
