Product description VHS Tape and cardboard slipcase. .com The Year is 2033. Earth has been clobbered with a comet, civilization has been destroyed, and it hasn't rained in 11 years. Nearly all the water on the planet is controlled by the evil Water and Power company, which is in turn controlled by the even more evil Kesslee (Malcolm McDowell). Who stands in the way? Some mysterious mutants called the Rippers and, of course, Tank Girl. Lori Petty plays Tank Girl, the wisecracking, defiant heart of the movie, as kind of an inner child gone wild. Unfortunately Petty can't quite carry a movie on her own--her zingers frequently fall flat and she seems to be continually worried that we still like her. Luckily there's Naomi Watts as Jet Girl to save the day: smart, shy, and inherently way more appealing than Tank Girl. Tank Girl is based on the comic of the same name, and it is visually an eye-popper. It's worth watching for the insane set and costume designs alone. --Ali Davis

A great Friday movie
You have to see Tank Girl at least 5 times to begin to get everything that's packed in. The only criticism I have is that there is so much you can get overload. Also, you must suspend disbelief completely. One of our favorites of all time.

Kind of wish Iâd left it in the past
Two comic book movies I remember from 1995: âTank Girlâ and âJudge Dreddâ.Despite the existence of Rob Schneider, âJudge Dreddâ was fun because Sylvester Stallone looked exactly like the Judge himself. Uncannily so. Karl Urban never took off his helmet in the ugly and unnecessary 2012 remake, âDreddâ and otherwise did a fair impression of the Street Judge. Even so, the remake was a joyless, unpleasant tedious mess. Not a second of fun. Which brings us to âTank Girlâ.Maybe the problem is that Lori Petty never looks like Tank Girl. Even in a scrappily drawn comic with minimal detail and sketchy backgrounding (at best), you have an idea what your character looks like, and Lori Petty wasnât it. Which is pointed up by the frequent and jarring comic panels interposed rather too often into the live action. Lori Pettyâs portrayal was way too glam to be Tank Girl. The comic had some of the scruffiest, most slap-dash stream of consciousness graphics of the era. Trying to translate that into live action just did not come off.And yet, when this movie was new and MTV was a thing and I was much younger and probably influenced by substance ingestion, I remember thinking âTank Girlâ the movie was pretty cool. âRadâ as we used to say back then. When it cropped up on Amazon, I now thought âneato!âNow that Iâve seen it with older and more judgmental eyes, I kind of wish Iâd let it be a slightly pleasant memory. Because seeing it now, itâs pretty terrible. Malcom McDowell, almost always fun, isnât. Talk about phoning it in. The great Stan Winston did the kangaroo guys, and despite a sizable budget, they look worse than the average Star Trek TNG alien of the week. Sorry, Stan, this one was a misfire. Those heads are not good at all.And weâre halfway through the picture before we even see a tank, and when we do, itâs a sore disappointment. What is this, some Jeep tricked out with prosthetic treads? A bit of research shows that itâs mostly an ancient âStuartâ M5 (sourced from Peru, of all the places obsolete tanks get to) tricked out with some welded on Cadillac pieces. Letâs just say it ainât no Abrams.Itâs tiny and utterly unconvincing. Tanks are like, big, yâknow? And impressive? Canât really say much about the jet, strictly an afterthought there. Jet Girl herself, Naomi Watts, does what she can with a superfluous part. She was really young!Lori Petty hits her jokes way too hard, and the timing is sort of off, Mel Brooks style. And folks, if you want to throw in a Julien Temple style musical number, why not bring in Julien Temple? Because nobody can pull this stuff off like Temple did in, say, âAbsolute Beginnersâ. Rachael Talalay did not display an aptitude for this inexplicable interlude. Also, there is this creepy undercurrent of implied and not-so implied child abuse and sexual violence. In a comedy. Kind of jarring today. Unpleasant. Not funny.Maybe Iâm being too hard on this harmless girl power movie; its feminist heart was in the right place, I guess. Itâs kind of amazing this comic was ever filmed to start with, and I find comic book purists tedious, the people who are forever complaining about any deviation from the printed canon and how the Submariner would never, ever do this or that. Speaking of which, Marvel, when do we get a Submariner movie? Aquaman as kind of a tiresome pill. But Namor, he had attitude! The Submariner could beat up Aquaman and make Aquamanâs girlfriend hold his jacket while he did it.I digress. Iggy Pop has a momentary cameo and, as Rent Boy said, having to choose between taking his girlfriend out or going to the Iggy concert, âWell, yeah, but itâs Iggy Pop!â There are some nostalgic songs, Joan Jett sings âLetâs Fall in Loveâ accompanied by local hero Paul Westerberg (âMats Rule!), and thereâs weird early stuff from Bjork. The whole thing is a throwback to when MTV existed and I was younger.Iâm going with a generous 3 stars, because âTank Girlâ did make me remember, however briefly, a bygone more optimistic time. And because it lost MGM 15 or 16 million dollars. Which was a big deal back then; now itâd be just a rounding error on a Marvel superhero movie.

Up and down
There are parts of this movie that are enjoyable- there are others that would seem to have been better to have simply just read upon the comic book pages themselves. Note: I have never read the comics that inspired this movie- just sayingâŚ

LOVE. THIS. FILM. Great soundtrack, lots of FUN and actually ok for older kids.
Itâs so bad itâs AWESOME. One of my all time faves. Lori Petty makes a fun Tank Girl and Ice-T is the greatest, snarkiest mutant kangaroo ever! Naomi Watts as Jet Girl is adorable. Definitely having Malcolm McDowell as the supervillain was cute. Fun sets, fun costuming, GREAT & FUN soundtrack... itâs definitely a âcultâ film and silly/campy.If youâre a hardcore TG fan - this might not be the Rebecca youâre interested in. This Rebecca is a bit âbubblegumâ. But I thought Lori Pettyâs version was fun and adorable.Actually, this is a fairly âkid-safeâ movie. (Personally, I think more little girls need to know who TG is. ) If youâre a âcool parentâ, this is a decent film for kids 12+. There IS a some violence but itâs mostly implied and/or *super* campy and one part where a ârazor ballâ cuts through a characterâs hand (hint for refernence - Iggy Pop). Some really vague drug references - but kids wonât get it. I donât recall any profanity or anything OVERTLY sexual (one of the mutant kangaroos IS perv but again, kids really wonât get it), they kept things fairly âcleanâ. If you take issue with firearms, I will warn you, there are a LOT of them. A good time fighting a bad guy and trying to get some water on a desert planet. My inner 12 year old had a blast. Fun animations too.âFeeling a little inadequate?â :-D

wildly energetic and fun
That Lori, whatta showstopper! I watched this for the first time back in 97 or so and loved this girl! Shes also got great legs but Its her combative, pugnacious belligerence though thats so damned funny! This plot is cockamamie even among cockamamie comic book plots but thats okay, this a film that is best enjoyed with your brain on standby mode. Malcom is such a parody of villany you almost feel affection for his 'evil'...hes like Darth Vader :). When I first saw the scene with Iggy I swore he was Alice Cooper but that scene is funny regardless of who played the weirdo. The scene where TG gets her ankles around the guys neck, breaks it then looks at his buddies with a look of innocence and says "what"?? ... THAT is FUNNY!!The soundtrack is also pretty outstanding ( except for the piece done by Stomp , THAT , the soundtrack could have done without ).I had this movie on vhs but I recently watched it again on Amazon prime . Its funny and wildly energetic , so much so that it goes into cartoon mode from time to time. I was very entertained by this film and , again , that Lori Petty was quite the showstopper , im sure shes been in other movies ect but im not really a movie/tv type but I may go nosing around to see what else she has done with her professional life. When I next get some downtime I may just watch this yet again. :)

35% of the movie is missing (but read the review anyways)
First off, I have to mention that I failed to notice when I bought this DVD that I was importing it from outside Region 1. I had to change my laptop to Region 2, and it can only switch to another region four more times. So I guess I will never watch 'Tank Girl' more than a couple of times.Anyway, I cannot in good faith call this an outright movie. It is heavily butchered - I read before watching it that there were many outtakes - and that becomes very noticeable in the last half of the movie. This movie failed to get beyond the concept stage, and I would have liked to have seen it without all those outtakes, although I enjoyed what was there. The movie is based off of a comic cartoon, so that has to be taken into consideration when watching it. Some live-action movies based off of cartoons work, some don't. Make what you will of that.Kesslee is possibly the evillest villain I've ever seen in any movie. He makes Darkness in 'Legend' seem like a sweetheart by comparison. To add that, the bad guy faction, Water & Power, appears as a cruel oppressor to both its enemies and employees alike. That all said, I am not sure I liked the narratives that the movie portrayed: clean white males in business suits vs. dark-skinned quasi-animals, lecherous men vs. innocent women, a for-profit corporation vs. a primitive tribe, etc. Maybe I'm reading too far into it if I find that to be a rather left-leaning narrative. All the negatives of the movie stacked together can't negate that there are a couple really touching, meaningful things in the movie. The first one is when Tank Girl asks Jet Girl, "Why do you cover your mouth when you smile?". That is just a wonderful sentiment that I want to carry with me. Second one is how Tank Girl's tank is decked out after she mods it: it's covered with little trinkets and toys that commemorate the happier things of 20th century life and entertainment. The movie takes place in 2033, so I think that's a reminder of the sentimental value of so many things of the 20th century that may last much longer than we think. It's hard to put a bottom line on this movie without just saying in short everything I wrote above. Someone in another comment called this "the ultimate cult flick" or something to that effect. I will stop a step short of agreeing, mainly on my issues with how chopped this movie is. I would be lying if I said this movie wasn't entertaining, but I would also be lying if I said I was satisfied with it the way it was. It's a neat concept movie that people in decades to come will stumble across from time to time and relive the alternative movie scene of the 1990s.

Very impressed with the artwork and overall sensitivity to the comic!
Tank Girl.. what can I say? The title and cover art invoke a sense of triviality in me that cause me to wonder at the product. I am in the category of initiate within the Tank Girl comic universe. Basically, I knew nothing about it prior to purchase except what I could learn from Youtube and Wikipedia, however, that was enough to convince me that the product had entertainment value, and I must say I was unexpectedly impressed. On a scale of 1 to 5, this product represents a 3 for believability in its universe and in the depth of seriousness its producers have taken. Tank Girl is light, improbable and humourous. While dealing with violence and life and death issues, it prefers not to dwell on the macabre.Lori Petty does a great job being this highly improbable, tongue-in-cheek heroine. And, I enjoyed Malcolm McDowell (A Clockwork Orange)'s over-the-top villain very much (one of his better performances -- and, M, I'll stand on that). The younger fans might also enjoy seeing recent star Naomi Watts as Jet Girl.Again, what can I say except sometimes light is a relief. Parental warning: not suitable for children.. I know.. it's ironic.

An OK Start, But Descended Into a Corny, Naff Mess of A Film!!!
Tank Girl is the 1995 film adaptation of the cult comic. The plot is about a post apocalyptic future (seemingly Australia) where after a meteor hit's the Earth it doesn't rain again and an evil Corporation, headed by Malcolm McDowell, controls nearly all of the worlds water supply and thus power. The Corporation aims to eliminate any opposition and attacks a punky/hippy like settlement where Tank Girl lives and abducts a little girl who lives there. The rest of the film is her adventures to save the girl and bring down the evil corporation, with the aide of mutated Kangaroo humanoids. The first half of the film was quite good in a tongue in cheek knockabout way. Reasonably amusing and a bit fun. The second half of the film was diabolically bad and lost it's way big time. It downfall started with the introduction of the Kangaroo people, they were awful their dialogue, their acting the way acted as characters was corny, cringeworthy and embarrassing. They also looked really stupid and when they started to do some stupid dance I was laughing at the embarrassment I was witnessing on my TV screen. The plot became ludicrous after that and a complete mess. Lori Petty in the lead role of Tank Girl got a lot of stick for her acting, but I think she was told to act in that fashion not to take herself seriously and I wasn't bothered by her performance in the film, I will say that at the start her accent wavered between an American accent and an Australian one, which is poor but maybe the film was confused as to where it was set, most of the rest of the cast spoke with Australian accents. Malcolm McDowell as the villain was on auto Pilot keeping his English accent a stereotype and cliche of Hollywood villains, he was neither bad nor good in the role. Early unremarkable role for Naomi Watts as Tank Girl's sidekick and ghastly acting from the likes of Ice T as the Kangaroo men. A positive for the film was the soundtrack which was very good.I got this on a US Blu Ray and the picture was pretty good and clear good sound quality. I've never read the Tank Girl comic, it has a high reputation, but I hope it's not as naff as this film, i'm sure it's not. All in all started alright then descended into a complete mess, with corny, lame acting and story not good.

Love Tank Girl but can't rate this copy of the DVD - can't watch it!
I made the mistake of not looking closely at the vendor. Didn't realize the DVD would be coming from Italy. Can't play the DVD on my player - keep getting the error "incompatible region". The vendor told me it can be played on a computer by switching the region to region 2. I can't find any place to switch regions - and get the error message that the "computer software is not compatible". I was going to return it but the postage will cost pretty much what I paid for the DVD! As well - I'm not even sure if it is in English - The jacket is in Italian. Tank Girl the movie 5 stars!!! One of my favorite cult classic films! Consumer beware - check where your DVD is being shipped from.
