Q: is it internationally unlocked?

Umm, I think you'd have to include that in your plan, and that's pretty expensive. I've got mine in Germany right now, but can't use it.

Q: would this be a good 1st phone for my 11yr old?

Yes, for use as a phone & texting device. Not a smart phone so no Internet, which is a good thing for a kid. Very rugged. Can be dropped over & over with little damage. I've been using a smart phone for 2 years but often miss my old Intensity.

Q: Reviews seem to vary: Will, or will not, this phone still work with verizon networks?

you can make and receive calls and texts with verizon on this phone but you cannot get on the internet, you can take pictures but you cannot send them to anyone, this is a bare bones phone which works great for me but in the modern phone world, it would not. also, next december in phoenix, the antennas are being upgraded and i will have to get another phone as this one will no longer work. that will be a sad day for me as i am enjoying this one very much.
