An older series but one that seems to hold up.....mostly
I had no idea what this was when i started it, so i went in blind. Over 3/4ths of it finished and i'm STILL not entirely sure, but whatever it is it's certainly charming.I wouldnt be surprised to find out this was an old japanese myth, tagging a flying vixen to save the world. What goes from there is a very diverse array of comedy, from physical to sight gags to absurdist stuff, but the main focus seems to be making the main character Ataru's life a living hell. Not even like goofy grief like modern slice of life/harems, his mother talks about disowning him and he becomes an international punching bag. It loops around from funny to honestly sad and back to funny several times.Any problems i have i think come down to it's age. Stuff happens out of nowhere yet acts like it was set up, and likewise things just vanish never to be seen again. The art is also good but clearly old, not as blobish or cartoony as say Go Nagi (Devilman/Cutie Honey) but i doubt Junji Ito or Q Hayasashida have to watch their backsI also have no idea how this is gonna run for 30 volumes but we'll get there when we get thereOverall it's a fun time and while the old style may put some people off the over the top writing and characters and humor will probably suck you in

Fun start to a landmark series
It's hard to explain Urusei Yatsura to the unenlightened, in terms of its colossal cultural impact on Japan during the time of its publishing/airing from 1978 to 1987 - almost like a Simpsons for the East, in terms of its broad appeal. The size and scope of the audience it attracted was fairly unparalleled in anime and manga before, and reading it now, the accessibility of it despite its cosmic absurdity makes this easy to understand. As Takahashi's first work, it is rough and unpolished, with cruder artwork than the crisp, clean-lined images we associate with Ranma and Inuyasha, but this somehow makes it all the more charming. The episodic, off-the-wall nature of each chapter makes it easy to pick up, and if one story doesn't do it for you, the next will probably have something to offer. I found myself laughing out loud several times while reading (which doesn't often happen), if not for the silliness of the situations than for the hilarious expressions! I've seen all 195 episodes of the TV series but had not read too much of the original manga due to its unavailability, so this new release delights me. And if you like it but don't love it, stick with it, as the TV series was much the same way. I will be happy to purchase more as it is released. Good on you for this release, Viz!

Proper Right to Left orientation of an absolute classic!
Urusei Yatsura is an absolute classic manga that is sadly overlooked recently. The first breakout hit from world renound mangaka Rumiko Takahashi, it tells the story of the lecherous Ataru Moroboshi and his misadventures with many potential love interests, including Shinobu, a childhood friend who he seems to love, but can't stop looking away to other women, and Lum, an Oni who challenges Ataru at the beginning of the series to best her at the Game of the Oni (tag) for the stake of the planet, and ends up mistakingly believing Ataru wants to marry her.Lum is often seen as one of the original Tsundere type characters, and along with Akane Tendo from another Takahashi series Ranma 1/2, helped form what we think of the term today. This reprint is the first time we will have this manga in the proper, right to left orientation and will be a chance to finish a series that was cancelled part way through on its first run. If you like other Takahashi series, want to understand one of the more influential series in the genre, or just plain love good comedy, this is a book I would highly recommend!

Like a Japanese Archie comic
Girl-crazy boy gets chased by a bunch of girls. Is a ridiculous as the old Archie comics. Archie with added supernatural beings. Has it's funny moments. But not terribly progressive. (it's, what, over 30 yrs old now?) Episodic. Doesn't seem like much would be lost reading these out of order. Don't hate it. But, unlikely to read more.

This book is weird and funny at the same time.
What i love about it is that it one of those storys where characters are bad but are writed in a way that make you love to hate them.

A Must Read
Sometimes when you have a long running series, it's interesting to see the first volume or two. Characters may not be fully developed yet, or will change a little according to reader feedback. I've always speculated that Urusei Yatsura was originally meant to be more of a love triangle with Shinobu as Ataru's intended girl, but Takahashi-sama rightly decided to put more focus on Lum.Though I love Lum's character, I mostly know her as sweet (aside from a jealous streak), innocent, and naive. What people forget is that in the earliest volumes she was sneaky, vulgar, and mean. And you know what? It's kinda fun seeing her this way, if only for a little while. These are also some of the most passionately made volumes of the series, the art just seems to come alive with energy and a feeling of momentum.

Classic Sci-fi Slapstick
As a fan of classic mangas, when I learned Urusei Yatsura was getting reprint-love, I knew I was going to at least purchase volume 1... but I was not expecting to get so wrapped up in the story. The town and its characters are masterfully woven into hilarious sci-fi slapstick by Rumiko Takahashi. Although most chapters could be seen as stand-alone stories, I found myself always eager to read the next way Ataru and Lum would get into mischief. What I love about this omnibus is the inclusion of “Data Files” where aspects of the story are analyzed and they give you cute facts: like the number of times Lum has electrocuted people... the inclusion of these short essays are much appreciated and makes me wish all reprints of classic manga included this feature

Dārin no Baka
