Hi, I actually follow my vet's directions, which are 1/8 tsp in food twice a day for my cat. Your vet would be able to tell you the right dose for your pet. However, the bottle's direction says to "give 100 mg/kg daily with meals. Dosage should be adjusted based on serial serum phosphorus determinations every 2-4 weeks or as indicated." No, it isn't gritty. It is a very fine powder, like talcum powder or corn starch, and it mixes into canned food or liquid very well (I did mix it in, not just sprinkle it over). My cat ate his food without any problems when I mixed it in, and a human who accidentally tasted it told me it has no taste.
