One of my top two.
Last fall, I spent a lot of time in bed (not due to my surgery). Rather than spending it bingeing or food, I binged on weight loss surgery books. I got something from all of them, even if it was to repeat and emphasize the same things. Two of the books really stood out above the rest. One was The Success Habits of Weight Loss Surgery Patients. I have read it 3 times and am working on a 4th. These really are the things weight loss surgery patients need to do to take the weight off and keep it off. There are surveys and reasearch backing up the information. There are examples from real patients emphasizing each habit.Another thing I have received from the book is support. There is an entire organization behind the book, which includes the author. It is the Bariatric Support Center International (BSCI). There is a website where you can read articles, order products specifically for bariatric patients, and learn about their support groups and webinars. There is even a Facebook page. Their goal really is to educate bariatric patients. While I appreciate the practical advice, I also need this support.

very anecdotal
I was hoping for something more factual and laid out in a more organized fashion. This is a few ideas/snippets of information interspersed between interviews with people who have undergone the surgery. It's very anecdotal and reads like a magazine article and was too focused on people's journeys and not enough on what exactly the specific habits were and how to establish them.

Highly recommended to anyone who has had, or is considering, weight loss surgery
There are literally dozens of books in this area, and only a small number are really, truly, deeply useful. This is one.Bariatric surgery can fail. As Colleen M. Cook emphasizes, any surgical procedure is only a tool. The real work has to be done over months and years by the patient. Bad eating and lifestyle habits can work against the operation to the extent that weight is not lost, or lost too slowly and in too small quantities to ever reach the goal. The key lies in that word "Habits" in the title. We all need to form and maintain behaviour patterns that will get the weight off and keep us healthy for the rest of our lives. The excellent advice in this book is well laid-out, concise and clear, with practical examples and many internet links to places where further support is available. As a bariatric patient myself, I highly recommend this book.

Helps me a lot
I return to this book again and again for inspiration and motivation. I am four years out from my surgery and down 115 pounds. But this is a hard journey, changing hte habits of a lifetime and it is so much easier to return to the old practices that robbed my health and well-being. People who haven't dealt with this have a distorted view of chronically morbidly obese people. I can't talk to them about what really matters to me. This book helps me to focus on the benefits and reminds me that the fight is worthwhile.

Pretty good
This book is slow in places but among the slow parts are gold nuggets of wisdom. I recommend it to anyone who has made the decision to have weight loss surgery. Some of the helps mentioned to be online and on Facebook seem to not exist anymore.

Great Book!
I've bought many copies of this book over the last few years and given them to friends and family that have had the weight-loss surgeries. I recommend it to my patients who've had the surgeries. It's one of the best I've seen. And I had the surgery myself over 12 years ago. I didn't have the book at that time, but wish I had had it. It is wonderfully written. The information is excellent, but also the format it's written in is outstanding - easy for people to grasp and remember.

Not as informative as I expected
Having gone through nutritional training from my culinary school, this book lacks in information. It was written in 2003, a lot of information had changed. Also, personally, I did not enjoy all the stories. I was expecting more textbook-ish and not stories about Bob the Mechanic and Tootsie the Clown or personal success stories.

This is an excellent book. Thought provoking and informative. I had bariatric surgery recently and this book has helped me approach my new life in a positive way with more tools to help. it also has info on websites books and organisations that are useful. if you are thinking of buying this book have a look at another one called weight loss surgery for dummies, they make a great double purchase.
