Great book for anyone interesed in drawing comics
I originally got this when it came out and studied it everyday. It is such a good beginner book for comic art.The book is broken down well in what you could consider lessons. He does a good job at explaining perspective inrealtion to comics. The last section of the book expains, visually, how using different inking techniques and showing how they can make the same image look and feel different.Even today I still refer back to it. Too bad its hard to find and not a lot of people know about it. I was lucky to be able to find it!

One of the best.
I really enjoyed this book overall. I like Andy Smith's style of art and I thought this book contained some very useful tips on comic book art. None of these boks will teach you to be an artist outright but it is always good to get tips from every scource you can. Smith does a good job at illustrating overall anatomy. He covers basic body shapes and how to build them and then cover them with muscle. He also covers the aging process of the face well by giving several examples, both male and female. This is something most of these books rarely touch on. He covers the gesture sketch, and drapery. There are several good tips on storytelling as well. The inking section is very helpful. He gives several different artist's take on the same page. They briefly describe the tools they use and why they chose to ink rhe way they did. This book is not without it's flaws, however. I feel I must mention that it is completely lacking in any construction of the hands and feet. It also leaves out a lot of detail on facial features. Also, he does not give any instruction on how to actually create lines with the tools mentioned in the inking section. He merely gives you examples of lines and tells you what tools he used. Though these are downsides, they do not take away from the overall quality of the book. As a whole this book is a must to add to an artist's library.

Great book
This book reminds me a lot of Stan Lee's how to draw Marvel Comics. With the exception this book covers far more material and goes into deeper instruction. This book is excellent for beginners. Now that doesn't mean if you can't draw a stick figure, that reading this book will make you Jim Lee after two weeks. What it will do is provide an excellent reference for mistakes you are having trouble correcting, and help guide you when you are unsure of how to do a different thing, like shading, hatching, perspective ect.I highly recommend this book. It is very cheap if you buy it used and worth the cost.

Maybe not for beginners, but nothing much for the advanced.
Some nice samples of comic art, with basic 'how to draw people' info. Unfortunately the author never really shows a direct connection between the two. Something about exaggerating motion and form would have been helpful.About 1/4 to 1/3 of the book covers developing a complete comic, that is finally inked in B/W. But nothing about using color. Nothing about getting work 'camera ready' and / or how to digitalize it.I think some of Burne Hogarth timeless books would be a much better investment

Same old drawing book.
Normally I don't but into "how to draw" books. Drawing skill comes with practice, not by reading. I heard this was a good one so broke down and bought it (with a few others) they all collect dust on my shelf.

A breath of fresh air
Unlike so many "how to draw comics" books, this one explains _why_ you are doing something as well as what to do. Consequently it does a much better job. No "4 step" processes here (complete with a huge gap between two of the steps). This explains all the aspects of drawing dynamic comic art. Like many of the others though it won't turn you into an artist - you will need some raw talent as well. But it doesn't have those "anyone can draw" claims on the cover either. This will allow anyone who has _some_ talent and has tried and failed to draw comic art to enhance their skills and understand how to draw, rather than copy comic-book heroes and heroines.Excellent stuff. Highly recommended.

Excellent !!
Drawing dynamic Comics by Andy Smith is a must own for any artist interest in Comics. The emphasis is on practice ,understanding and experimenting with form.A knowledge of perspective, anatomy is a must so not recommended for beginners.I cannot praise Andy Smith enough for sharing such knowledge in a clear, concise and enjoyable way;my work feels alive and dynamic as opposed to stifled and rigid ,as most anatomy book are useless for drawing comics.Don't take my work for it,try it..

Yeah good book for comic artists. Better than some others of notable makes when it concerns the actually process of drawing.SMiths figures are good the only concern I have is in the size of heads on the super hero's. Yeah it is all about impression but a touch too smaill for me but that aside a good book

Good in Theory
Ok first i'll say how great the artwork is because well, its amazing. However you can't actually copy any of it unless you were one of the artists who worked on it. I bought this hoping it would help me to draw comics. It didn't. It gives the most amazing theory behind drawing comics, or anything to be honest, it shouldn't really be a 'how to draw comics' book because it relates to everything, except teaching you how to draw. Now the theory is incredibally useful to know, but theory doesn't teach you how to draw. It gives three steps for a handful of things such as how to draw the face, actually thats the only step by step process and it starts at fully drawn out line and progresses to fully drawn then shaded, again it doesn't actually teach you. I would suggest buying this only if you are already an acomplished artist just to add to your book collection, otherwise this book is of no use.
