The Portable Henry Rollins

Unique voice
There's no man on Earth like Henry Rollins. The work is self-deprecating, vicious, haunting and hilarious. Hard to describe, just delve in. One to pick up at odd moments and indulge in for little bits at a time. Definitely a keeper.

Disappointing, on several levels.
I first came across Rollins when I was reading the music press around 30 years ago and perhaps that was the time to explore his work - at the age of 53, the level of insight spawned from his random thoughts as displayed in the first 10 pages doesn't really add anything to my life.I bought this used and, when I then found a folded post-it note as a makeshift bookmark at page 33, the portents weren't good. However, I didn't even make it that far - I only managed another 3 pages before a story about him voluntarily gassing mice at a research lab due to an infection outbreak; his 'survival of the fittest' mantra once appealed to me, but this episode - with its allusions to the Nazi's master-race/final solution strategy - were the last words I read.Given 2 stars because maybe (as others here have suggested), I would have been better-served by a different offering or medium, rather than this collected works or his written work generally. Or maybe he's just not my sort of bloke after all.

hard slap to the soul
the writing of henry at his brightest and yet darkest times. hard bitter poetry with funny short stories make this a book that will make you take a long hard look at your own life, trials and tribulations that we have all suffered yet repress and hide behind our soul windows. simply put some of the best real life writing around. thank you henry!

Raw and insightful
As the name suggests, this is an ideal book for on the road. Full of stories and poems that will make you stop and think. A great introduction to Rollins' work.
