Caution When Installing a Top Mount Damper
I like it, but...fireplace was not drafting properly and we had some smoke in the house. I have been building fires using this fireplace for 20 years and never had a problem. I replaced my top mounted old damper which was not working with this one and had smoke in the house whenever having a fire. I removed this new damper and left flue open and was able to burn the same seasoned wood without any smoke in the house. I installed the new damper again and smoke in the house.I contacted my chimney sweep, who got my measurements out and told me that my flue is sized "just right" for opening of the fireplace. This damper slightly reduces the opening of the flue, and with the flipper mounted closure, further reduces the opened area of the flue. In my particular case, this caused insufficient drafting.I very much like the damper and feel that it creates a substantial reduction of draft when not burning. However, as a caution, go to a Sweep and ensure that this product will sufficiently draft your fireplace based on your fireplace's construction. I am now stuck with a damper that is not serviceable for my fireplace.

Easy Enough for any Typical HomeOwner
Very easy to install. Took about two hours on a Saturday afternoon-- including tear-out of the old damper system. My advise for not making a mess of the long cable is to slowly lower the handle down while holding the loop together so that it does not unravel and knot up as you lower it down.My only concerns are two. 1) I'm not sure how long that steel cable will last. Will suck if it snaps or breaks in a year. 2) It doesn't 100% seal up when closed. More like 99%. If you look up the flue when it's closed you can still see light in the sides where the hinge bolt for the flap attaches through the base brackets. It's a VERY small opening, about 1.5" long and maybe a 16th in width. It's not a lot, but it's clearly visible with light. Also, I'm just a typical home-owner. A YouTube video and the instructions are more than enough for anyone to do this. Our Chimney Sweep Company quoted us nearly $500 for this exact setup.

Easy to install
Easy to install. Be sure to unravel the steel cable before lowering down the chimney. Only drawback is that I had to cut off 2 corners to get the Chimney Cap (purchased separately) to fit around the damper, and screw to the ceramic chimney. This is understandable because you cannot custom make every damper.Overall Excellent product. Will have to wait a few months before I can calculate energy savings. But with the damper sealed to the chimney with provided fireproof silicone, and the damper door has a (fireproof - of course) rubber-like seal when closed. This is 10x better than the open chimney I had before I installed this damper so I expect this to have cost savings over what I had.

Lower heating bill; easy installation
This is a great invention. My faulty damper was allowing cold air to rush into my house in the winter and to escape in the summer. This external damper was extremely simple to install (it sits on top of the chimney and is attached with sealant, so it will fit anything between 10"-14", I'd estimate). The only problem I had was getting the LONG chimney chain untangled, which was totally my fault. Unravel it very carefully AS you feed it down the chimney, not before. You will need a masonry drill bit to attach the chain anchor. I can't remember which size. Everything else is included. Well worth the price. Put it in yourself and save even more. (A chimney cleaning company quoted me $400 for installation of a similar product. No way!)

This is a great product. It was easy to install
This is a great product. It was easy to install, seals nice, and looks pretty good. I have opened it after rain and a little water fell in that was sitting on the lid, but nothing to worry about. I guess that just meant the seal was tight! I would recommend it because of how easy it was to install and how well it works.
