Very good detector for beginner!
I read all instructions and went out briefly to try it, I found an old penny 1st shot and it worked as indicated. You must take your time and learn the machine and itโs tones. I agree the pin pointer is junk you need a better quality one there. The directions and information on water use is poor you cannot completely submerse this unit it should be more informative on this type of use. But for the money Iโm satisfied.

Detector very good, handheld wand not so much
The primary detector does a decent job but the handheld detector is one step above worthless--the wand has to be actually touching metal. My friend's Garrett wand detector can be a good 6-8 inches away and still detect--I would recommend buying these items separately so you can buy a decent wand detector.

Just good enough
The Bounty Hunter Sharp Shooter II metal detector is just good enough for a beginner to stay interested in metal detecting. The pin pointer is absolutely useless. It's very cheap looking and performs even worse. You can stick it in a pocket full of change and not find a nickel it's so useless. Even The Metal detector itself isn't one I would recommend. It's very poorly made and cheap looking and even cheaper feeling. It will detect change and rings etc but it's discrimination ability is basically non existent. The sensitivity is constantly changing and it's overall detection ability is poor considering I couldn't detect a quarter , dime , nickel or penny I placed just 4" under loose soil. It wasn't until I placed the 4 coins in the same 4" deep hole together that it finally alerted me to the detection . It's just ok for a beginner to remain interested in metal detection. Well, if it's poor performance doesn't sour them on metal detecting right out of the gate anyway.
