The Dessert Book
K**R
An essential cookbook for home bakers.
The University Press of Kentucky has wisely chosen to publish this updated version of a classic Duncan Hines cookbook. Bon vivant, pioneer food critic and Bowling Green native Hines didn't feel a meal was complete without a delicious dessert. "Recommended by Duncan Hines" was an assurance of excellence travellers and later, home cooks could count on. Hines was an early proponent of customizing cake mixes as later "cake mix doctors" have done. This gem of a book has a foreword by Michael and Jane Stern and is crammed full of recipes gathered by the late writer from favorite and mostly long-ago restaurants and gleaned from friends and family and tested for home cooks by his wife. Regional specialties are included. "The Dessert Book" is not a historic artifact, rather a welcome addition for anyone who enjoys preparing a wide variety of desserts from simple custards and puddings, cookies, fruit cobblers, pies, and cakes. The book may not have glitz and lots of glossy photographs but the recipes are plentiful, easy to follow and delicious.
