Very sad book
Very long book about Gary Ridgeway, the Green River Killer. I 1st learned there was a serial killer in early summer of 1984, my memory of seeing the flier posted at the laundromat of our small rural town in Washington shocked me horribly. My husband & I had moved to his hometown to be close to his parent's and family, after visiting from California where we married. We had visited in the summer of 1982 & made plans to settle in Washington after college, within 2 years, the news of the Green River Killer was not reported in California, just as Ann Rule wrote in her book. My sister's in Oregon knew nothing about this Serial Killer either, so it was a great shock to find a flyer at the laundromat, really chilling. I had grown up reading about the Zodiac Killer, who has never been caught, he started his rampage at the local Junior College when I was a young barely teenaged girl....finding out there was a killer on the loose by SeaTac was horrifying! I was in my 20s & expecting our 1st child, I can still see that 8 by 10 flier, that had was handwritten, with pictures of known victim's glued on & copied on an old commercial printer, like the one at our local Safeway. I was shocked, and continued to be, like everyone living in Washington, especially when it took so long to catch him. I felt Ms. Rule did a good job honoring the poor dead girl's & women he lured & killed, I don't care if they were prostitutes...there but for the Grace of God, those girls didn't deserve to die! Especially because of, or in spite of their circumstances, they all had families who grieved them. Well written & researched, this book took over 20 years for the author to write. I have read the critics who wrote she rushed it to press to soon, I disagree, Ann Rule wrote a very hard book about a very hard man. Like everyone who lives in Washington, I am very acquainted with the locations she wrote about, her descriptions are spot on. She described 1980s Washington very well, and the absolute terror the GRK caused here.

Worth the read
I love that this book is very fat - over 400 pages - so it is chock full of detail. True, it can be frustrating in that it takes a LONG time for the case to be solved. But I love that it gives a dedication to the victims who are treated respectfully in this book. There are some nice background histories on some of the girls, which makes the story much more interesting and makes you feel you knew those girls and their families to some extent. I think Ann does a nice job, also, of making sure the victims are not seen only as prostitutes but as human beings with goals and dreams because the public was not always so charitable. Ridgway himself is pathetic - so milquetoast in many ways, so average, and so indecently deceiving to his wife, Judith - who deserved so much better and who I felt incredibly sorry for. Very good job on Ann Rule's part and it appears, on the Green River Task Force's as well. The only negative I'd say is that the photos in the book I ordered were black and white and some were so unclear that I could barely make them out. I think color photos would have been far more flattering and much easier to see.

Green River, Running Red. A well written account of the Washington State Green River killer.
As with all of this Author's books, "Green River, Running Red" is an excellent read. This particular book, as with other books written by this Author, delves into the dark psychological mind of a serial killer, "The Green River Killer." This book is a true account of an actual serial killer who terrorized and murdered young women in the State of Washington for well over a decade. How was the Green River killer able to elude police capture for so long? Who were his victims and how did they so easily fall pray to this madman? Who was this killer and what did he look like? How did the Green River killer chose his victims and, most importantly, 'why' did he chose to kill them? This book provides physiological insight, and answers, to many of these questions. It goes into depth concerning the police investigations, including how and why the Green River killer was able to elude capture for so many years. It gives the reader an in-depth look at the victims themselves, putting real-live human faces to the young women who fell pray, so easily, to the killer. It also provides the reader a look into the lives of these young women and provides insight into the various reasons they chose the lifestyle of prostitution.I highly recommend this read to anyone who is interested in true-life crime stories, especially physiologists, law enforcement officers, and criminologists, who are actively evolved in the psychological study and/or apprehension of serial killers. This book will provide you insight, including 'lessons-learned' when it comes to profiling and apprehending killers such as the Green River killer.Actual photos of many of the victims, including the killer himself, are included in this book.

Interesting and repulsive
A very interesting story, but not for anyone since you require a strong stomach to tolerate this kind of criminal as the Green River Killer. But the main draw back is the length of the book and the disparity in the details, at times excruciatingly detailed in secondary points and at times just jumping over the most relevant aspect of the story. It would need a complete revision, perhaps someone ought to write again this same story. Almost all the information is here, but the writing seems to be returning a favor to the police.

Bad packaging for a fine book
The book was delivered in an oversized paper bag, without any padding whatsoever. As a result the book was pretty banged up during delivery. The book itself is very thorough and well written, as always with Ann Rule. She truly has a deep empathy for the victims and she goes to great lengths to tell their stories, and not only focusing on the violence as many other writers of the genre. But beware that you will likely receive a damaged book as shown in the pictures. Amazon really needs to put some effort to their packaging, as this is a problem I see all the time.

ottimo
