Q: What is the distance between the shelves? Will this accommodate Barbies?

The book shelf will not be big enough for Barbies. It's really made for books or very small stuffed animals. It is beautiful though.

Q: Could an ag bitty baby (about 15") sleep in any one of the compartments?

My granddaughter 's fits on top shelf. She loves to hide things in the bottom. Was really a great 4th birthday gift and looks beautiful in her room.

Q: Does the paint chemical smell go away?

When you first open the box there is a slight smell but I really couldn't tell if it's the paint or the packaging it is in. Once you start assembling the bookcase/doll, this oder dissipates. Not sure of timeline but the oder is gone, nevertheless. Hope this answer helps.
