Q: I need to hood up and old ide cd/dvd burner to usb3 will this work? this has probably been covered already, but looked and didn't see it.

I have hooked up some old IDE (wide ribbon cable) Hard Drives to it, they worked fine, they even hot swap which IDE does nor support. I don't know of any specific reason why your burner should not work.

Q: Where on my computer can I view the contents of the external hard drive?

If I understand the question correctly ..... You have plugged in an external hard drive and now you want to know where you can see the contents of the drive. My answer is to open "My Computer" or "Computer" depending on which operation system you have. In that window you should see another Drive letter or Name in your "My Computer" window. Double click on that reference and you should see the contents of your external drive. If no new reference appears, then try unplugging the external drive and then re-plug it in to see if Windows will recognize the drive. If nothing still happens then perhaps it is the drive that is bad and you will be unable to retrieve any data from the drive. Hope this helps a little.

Q: Why doesn't it show up on "my computer"?

If the drive is a FAT formatted drive, it should show up as a drive letter. If it is does not formatted as FAT drive, you will have to have some type of third party software to recognize it. Example, I had one that was a Linus formatted drive. I had to install a third party application to read it.
