The Relic [Region Free]

A bit of a B movie but surpassed expectations and was an enjoyable evenings viewing.

I got this film as a trip down memory lane, love the scene where Dr. Margo Green is chased through the museum labs by the creature, doors and glass flying everywhere!Feels like an 80s classic, but it was 1997, but not diminished in any way because of that!In my view up there with the likes of Alien :)

A very clever, neat, and exciting plot is well worked here, and the science behind the film is reasonably rational. There is quite a lot of science and I wonder if this puts people off the film. Evolutionary biology and rioting DNA chimera dance with man, beetle and lizard body tissues, along with disappearing hypothalamus glands and trip hand in hand throughout the film, as we imagine our poor victim/villain suffering the agonies of having his body pulled apart to become monstrous! And a couple of die hard scientists race against time to find the reasons for the problems and how they can kill the monster before it gets everybody else. We even get a rational explanation for the phenomenon, which may be satisfying to some but perhaps tedious to others. The camera work is very dark, (although it is shot in dark underground tunnels), and viewing can be a problem, but it's not difficult to know what's going on. The tension gets ramped up in these shots, because you know the monster's following! Stan Winston's monster is, as always a winner, business like teeth, nasty and vicious. I like this one being smelly too, due undoubtedly to the rapid evolutionary pace at which it's changing, and the psychological effect is all the better for us not really getting a complete glimpse of it until the end and then it's not much of a glance! The themes bowl along at a smart pace, and the science and action go well together. It seems to have a lot of thought behind it, despite being a low budget film, I find this satisfying. If you have a logical frame of mind, and like science I can't see why you won't like this. There are also one or two nasty gory shocks, and a gross out, with monster tongue and gloop, that's what a good sci-fi/horror should have!

While I am not one for horrors that attempt to (Poorly) s*** my pants, this made me laugh in suspense as I found it highly entertaining to watch and found it's quality of script and visuals more appealing than most of those Hollywood gaurgauntan films that make me think what a waste of my time and money. Defintely recommended for anyone just wanting to watch something of a decent film.

Love this film

I really enjoyed this film again. I had it on video before and I still moved my feet to the action. Worst bit was, near the end of the film when the creature was on fire and exploded but otherwise a very good film.

I really like this film. It's not a classic in any of the well-worn traditions and it does contain its share of fairly obvious horror monster movie moments that those in the know will see coming long before they arrive.I think the strength of the movie is in the casting of Penelope Ann Miller in the lead role. She is a terrific actress, who should have lots more screen time than she's received - and she's not your typical scream queen. She starts out as a very believable forensic anthropologist and her reactions when she sees the carnage the creature has left are totally believable. And the ending, where she employs her scientific prowess to fight to the last, is great (though her last line is a bit 'get away from her you b*tch' from Alien 2.The monster is also good, and never quite shown in full, which makes it all the more scary. You think you know what it looks like, then it changes a little and you mostly see glimpses rather than the whole thing.Tom Sizemore also does a good job as a slightly jaded cop, who really doesn't want the job, but goes along with it. He's the Joe Public to whom all the stuff about DNA, strange leaves and the whole monstery thing needs explaining. He even has a lucky bullet.But despite its origins in ordinary horror movie cliche, it does excite, baffle and make you think a bit, which is more than most do. And it has Linda Hunt in it. What more could you want?

a decent thriller but at times underwhelming a superstitious policeman having to solve a case when a special event is happening at a museum at the same time so tension in this film

The Authors Preston and Childs wrote the book. A stunner. This movie adaptation is a terrific - never a dull moment - with excellent cast AND I compare the script writing of this movie to others I watch. Most cannot compare. Lots happening but loose ends are tied up without confusion as the exposition is amazingly and subtly all encompassing - and not boring! This kind of movie - probably "horror" genre - seldom gets Oscar nods, but this is a great script and deserved some kind of appreciation.

Es una de las monster movies más representativas, hasta ahora se que en su momento fue recibida con malas críticas, debido a que no fue una buena adaptación del libro a la pantalla.En lo personal, creo que Penelope Ann Miller es una actriz underrated, ahora sale haciendo papeles secundarios cuando aquí demuestra que es buena y puede con el peso del protagónico.Tom ya había demostrado ser buen actor, aparte de tener en su haber buenos roles con buenos directores (Rescatando al Solado Ryan de Spielberg y Asesinos por Naturaleza de Stone), aquí hace bien su trabajo. Pero sus adicciones lo han llevado a hacer papeles en películas B que nunca llegan a la pantalla o siquiera valga la pena ver.Pues bien, ya ha pasado mucho tiempo desde el momento que fue realizada, ojalá algún día podamos ver la secuela titulada ‘El Relicario’ o de perdida un remake.Lo único negativo es qué hay escenas muy oscuras donde no se alcanza a distinguir qué pasa.El Blu-ray de Paramount tiene audio y subtítulo en español.NO tiene audio ni subtítulo en español.

Im Hafen von New York wird ein Führerloses Transportschiff gefunden. Alle an Bord sind Tot und verstümmelt. Kurz danach treten im ortsansässigen Naturkundemuseum mysteriöse Vorfälle und Morde auf.Irgendetwas ist mit dem Schiff nach New York gekommen und es ist hungrig...Der Film „Das Relikt“ aus dem Jahr 1997, unter der Regie von Peter Hayms („Unternehmen Capricorn“, „Ein Richter sieht rot“, „ End of Days“...) ist ein sehr gelungener Gruselfilm. Ich würde hier nicht von einem reinen Horrorfilm sprechen. Für mich beinhaltet „Horror“ immer „Jumpscares“ und „Splatter“. Es geht hier zwar auch stellenweise brutal zu aber das macht diesen Film nicht aus. Peter Hayms sagte mal irgendwann, dass er eigene Erfahrungen aus seiner Kindheit mit der Geschichte von Douglas Preston und Lincoln Child, „Relic– Museum der Angst“, verbinden würde. Hayms war wohl als Kind mal über Nacht in einem Museum vergessen oder sonst irgenwie zurückgelassen worden. Quellen dafür, ob das der Wahrheit entspricht, hab ich leider nicht mehr aber ist (glaube ich ) auch nicht so wichtig und ich zumindest denke schon, dass es der Wahrheit zumindest nahe kommt...In zunächst ruhigen Bildern und Kamerafahrten wird die Geschichte erzählt und diese Art den Film zu zeigen unterstützt hervorragend die unheimliche, bedrohliche Atmosphäre, die nach der Ankunft des Schiffes im Hafen, dann im Museum lauert.Die Darstellung des Monstrums wird wohl dosiert, nur rudimentär eingesetzt. Das mag vielen sauer aufstoßen aber mich stört es jetzt nicht, da der gezeigte Rest -die Handlung halt- mich zumindest überzeugen kann. Klar, eine große, Oscarreife Geschichte sollte man nicht erwarten aber sie ist fesselnd und ich war doch gespannt, wie das Ganze wohl ausgeht.Viele Negativrezensionen weisen darauf hin, dass das der Film zu stark vom Buch abweichen würde. Einige Charaktere wurden wohl gestrichen und der Hauptcharakter des Buches wurde durch einen mehr oder weniger häufig auftretenden Nebencharakter ersetzt. Da ich das nicht beurteilen kann (ich habe das Buch nicht gelesen) aber immer auch versuche eine Eigeninterpretation zu schätzen, geht dieser Aspekt nicht in meine Wertung mit ein -kann er ja auch gar nicht...Das Bild ist DVD-scharf und im vorbildlichen 16:9 Format. Die wunderbare Musik umschmeichelt die Bilder und unterstützt gelungen die Atmosphäre. Die Darsteller sind super und auch alles andere hier weiß zu überzeugen.Fünf Sterne für einen gelungenen Monster-Gruselfilm!
