Great movie!
I saw "Music of the Heart," with my parents and my sister in the theatres, when it was first released. This was the first Meryl Streep movie, if not one of the first that I had ever seen. Meryl Streep plays Roberta Guaspari(her best work since SILKWOOD) a greek musician, who recently divorced and moved to NYC with her two kids. And since she doesn't have much money she needs to find a good job. Her boyfriend, hooks her up with a principal of a private school, and although at first the principal is reluctant to hire her, she ends up a long-term substitute violin teacher at the school. Her first group of students aren't very good, but after ten years they get better. But THEN guess what happens? The school board loses money and almost eliminates Roberta's job. And during a conference at Roberta's home, they find out that the only way to save Roberta's job is for Roberta and her students to do a benefit concert. So they book the 92nd Street Y. And then the Y had a fire or something, so they lose their venue. And it seems at that point that the program is really doomed. But fortunately, one of her other friends makes arrangements for them to have the concert mounted at Carnegie Hall. Many of the tunes that Roberta taught her students in the movie are also ones that my violin scholar cousins Emma and Jenny also learned on the violin. This is a great movie, and one that should not be missed.

Best Movie
I cry every time I watch it. This is a beautiful true story that will inspire you without becoming sappy like so many Hallmark movies. Sorry Hallmark lovers. I'm always seeking for good entertainment that I can watch with all generations and family members. And this one is it. It's real but without violence, sex or bad language. It's intelligent and has impact without becoming over sentimental and though it's set in Harlem it's NOT preachy or political!! That's probably why it wasn't on the market for so many years. But it is now and I couldn't be happier. A huge thumbs up!

Moving and mesmerising
A film based on a true story. Roberta (played by Meryl Streep) is devastated by her husband's sudden departure, and needs to support her two young sons. She persuades the headmistress of an inner city Harlem school to take her on as an extra music teacher, to teach children to play the violin. The music teacher is highly cynical and the Head is not sure it's possible... but Roberta works miracles. The theme is a bit like that of `Mr Holland's Opus' and similar stories: it's heart-warming, very moving in places, and extremely well made. The children are delightful, the sub-plots keep it moving, and the ending truly magnificent, with a text epilogue explaining what happened.Wonderful. I'm sure I'll be watching this one again, and I don't say that very often!Highly recommended.

I wanted to like it.
Oh, I wanted to like this so bad. I've always been a sucker for the 'inspirational teacher' story and Meryl is one of my all time favourite actresses. And what support, too. Angela Bassett and Gloria Estefan. So what happened? The fact is, it's just like every other story in a similar vein. It felt really cliched, to be honest. I won't deny that Meryl brings it, as always, but other than that, this movie didn't have much going for it. It didn't engage me like To Sir With Love or Stand and Deliver.

A story to warm your heart
This movie shows how a teacher overcomes the odds to teach a class of underprivileged children to play the violin on the big stage and to be proud of what they have achieved. To say the children and their backgrounds are challenging is an understatement and Meryl Streep plays the part of the teacher perfectly. This film will touch the heart as it is based on a true story and is well worth watching. Look out for Gloria Estefan in her acting debut.

Gave me Courage!
Hope & Courage pour forth from every note Roberta inspires from her inspirational young Students. The Film made me want to carry on trying. Seldom have Violins evoked such desperate emotional pain just to be alive and able to feel such powerful challenges.

Great!
I didnt recognise this DVD of Meryl Streep but as I have enjoyed so many of her films I decided to take a chance. I am so pleased I did...It's a very good film and I have become so interested in the story of the teacher she portrays in it ...highly recommendable!
