Wonderful branding, art, and feel!
I really enjoy how well put together this game is! Overall, this Farms Race's branding, artwork, anthropomorphic nuclear-age theme all come together really well: I really like the boxart, cardart, and pieces that assimilate into one satisfying experience. I'm super excited about this delux edition being released, and had to get myself a copy!

Surprisingly fun (overpriced) game with some production issues
Settlers of Catan meets Risk.If that sounds at all appealing, you'll probably like this game.I really enjoyed my first game, even though I lost. I liked it even more because I played it with a very hard audience to please (my wife, one of my kids and my parents), who normally would not sit through for a game for ~1.5 hours (much longer than a typical game we'd play). You can definitely play this with kids younger than 14 (provided that they're used to euro-style games). My kid was absolutely beating me despite being significantly younger than the suggested age on the box.The main reason that I'm knocking off a star is due to the production issues with the game. For a game that costs $100, I wouldn't expect to run into these issues.1. The deluxe edition upgrades the human tokens from cardboard chits to wooden meeples. In theory this is a fun upgrade. In practice, it creates a problem. Cardboard chits are much more likely to look uniform. This is important because the human tokens are supposed to have hidden information (the number of humans) which you only discover when you attack. Unfortunately, creating these as wooden meeples effectively marks them. Some of my human meeples have very distinguishing cracks on them, which makes it very easy to identify that meeple and know how many humans are there - which very much ruins the hidden information for the game.2. The cards are way too thin. The resource cards and spy cards were not printed on thick enough cardstock. I have $10 card games that are on thicker cardstock than this. These cards are going to get bent pretty easily within the first few games which is going to mark them. That's especially a problem for the Spy Cards which, again, are supposed to be hidden information. The tuck boxes that these cards go into are also sized way too big and are also made of cardboard that is way too thin.3. The box is too big. I'm not sure why they made the box as deep as they did. It ships with a foam insert to keep everything inside from moving around. They could have done without the foam insert and just made the box shallower. Just a very weird decision.4. The graphic design of the hexes needs some improvement, both with coloring and iconography. My parents had a really hard time distinguishing the forest/plutonium/weapons hexes from each other, and they don't clearly map back to the resource cards. A better job could be done to more uniquely distinguish those three tiles, as well as to better tie to the resource cards to the equivalent hexes.5. It is really confusing why the deluxe edition includes two additional resource dice (for a total of four). You only ever roll two, and apart from mentioning that they're included in the deluxe edition reference manual, there's no other mention regarding their use.6. I'm also having a real hard time understanding the $100 price on this game. Given all the pieces that this contains (and compared to other similar types of boardgames), this would be a much easier sell at $65.If you ignore the production issues and the price, this is a fun game. My family is already talking about when we'll play the next game (so that folks have an opportunity to enact revenge).

The bottom line is: You should buy this game.
Farms Race is completely unique, and it is only a matter of time before it is included in various “listicles” as one of the most unique games that push the boundaries of traditional board game design.Part of the genius of the game is that the rules appear relatively simple (and will be very intuitive to players familiar with Settlers of Catan). However, in order to win, you may notice that you are pushed out of your comfort zone to employ strategies that you would be punished for in other games. Part of the fun is discovering whether your strategy is genius or idiotic (or both). My favorite part of the game is that every player is given a “mutation”—each of which seems exceptionally overpowered when you get it. (You, too, will relish the feeling you get when you reveal your power for the first time to the rest of the table.) The thing is, the mutations are not overpowered because everyone has something equally insane. These mutations also make the game endlessly re-playable, which is a bonus.Watching how other people employ their mutations is just as exciting as playing yourself, which is a nice change from some games that shall remain nameless where you don’t really care when other people are playing. I’ve played Farms Race several times, and my favorite time was one in which I did not win—but it was so cool to see how the other mutations were successful.(I’m specifically referencing “Insecure,” a mutation artfully depicted as a sheep dressed as a nameless but recognizable dictator that arbitrarily nukes adjacent tiles, and “Mitotic,” a deluxe-addition mutation that splits and multiplies your troops into a scary mass of deformed farm animals.)I appreciate how the designers have a meta-conversation with you, too, as you play. The rule that forbids you from trading with other players on your turn is a design improvement compared to other games—like ahem Catan—that speeds up the game significantly while still allowing you to trade in a way that isn’t boring.I’ve played the “standard” edition and the deluxe edition (this one), and if you like games, you’ll definitely prefer the deluxe edition. There has been so much care taken to make sure the pieces are extra fantastic, and the extra mutations, spy cards, and animal/player (the bunny!) make the game more fun and increase the re-playability (as well as the potential player count). This version can play up to 5 people, where the standard edition goes to 4.People who love Catan and hate Catan will both enjoy this game, which I find fascinating. Farms Race appeals to the crowd who love intense strategy games but is also the kind of game that you can convince your friends to play who “don’t really like board games” or for the causal gamer.Farms Race is a great choice if you’re hunting down a moderately complex strategy game that encourages players to think creatively. It’s a great example of what makes modern board games special.

Perfect Game!
The perfect game doesn't exist...Enter Farms Race *Hold my beer!* If you hate Euros, buy this game! If you love Euros, buy this game! The game is literally Animal Farm in game form, perfect theming for a "euro parody". I love absolutely everything about this game, it's so much fun especially if you have a good group of friends playing with you. The deluxe edition is beautifully made with fantastic components. The mini expansion allows 1 extra player so 5 instead of being limited to 4. The pieces are well made and feel great to move around as you play. The game itself is so well themed and hilarious and fun to play. I remember being intrigued when I saw this game hit Kickstarter but I wasn't convinced to pull the trigger until I saw the deluxe edition was released in retail. I am so, so happy I decided to try it out, it has quickly rocketed to one of my favorite all time games. If you like board games even the slightest bit, this game was made for you! Don't even think about it, just buy it!
