The Little Engine That Could: Loren Long Edition

Great story for young kids
I had this book as a child and loved it. So during a recent library visit I saw this edition and picked it up for my 2 1/2 year old daughter. She LOVED it too. She had most of the story memorized after just a few days of us reading it over and over again. So of course I couldn't resist buying it on here when I was doing some assorted Christmas shopping. The illustrations are beautiful. Much more vibrant and eye catching than the original. Each of the trains have a distinct look that makes them stand out as unique characters. My daughter is able to identify each train in the distance and makes an identifying statement about each one (such as "He's sooo tired" or "He's a shiny new engine!"). The illustrations are also nearly full page and give the book a more updated feel.As for the other reviewers that said this book is sexist - I never picked up on that as a kid. I also don't think most kids would pick up on something like that either. There are bigger things to worry about than the genders of fictional talking train engines.

"I think I could" "I think I could"
As a young boy growing up I did not have many books read to me before I went to bed. I wish this one could have been there for me to inspire me, as it has so many others over the years. I would hear about the title "The Little Engine That Could." To no avail, it would take me well into my adult life for me to finally pick up "The Little Engine That Could." Now I realize how powerful a phrase, ("I think I could" "I think I could") seeped into the mind of many to spur them on in life. For me it is still not to late to acquire positive reinforcement. "The Little Engine That Could," should be read and reread over the years for an effectual attitude. It is never to late "What The Mind of Man Can Conceive and Believe, The Mind Can Achieve." Thanks, to the "Little Engine That Could."

Great book that will be a good addition to every child's library.
I bought this adorable book for my grandson's third birthday He was thrilled with it and carried it all evening. The pictures were beautiful. We all enjoyed reading it and enjoyed remembering reading it ourselves as children. I highly recommend it.

A favorite for years now
i can't even believe how many nights my son has picked this book at bedtime. He first got it when he was almost 2 and now he's 3+ and still loves it. The pictures are bright and gorgeous. I love the emotions on the characters' faces. We've used this book to teach my son about saying please and thank you and about trying hard and helping. Bonus: the main character little engine that could is a GIRL. So so so many of the kids' books have male protagonists. For animals and trains and trucks they are almost always boys.

Good book, just don't compare it to original
At first I was disappointed because this story is very different from the original. But after reading it it's a cute story in and of itself if you can manage to not compare it to the original.

One of my favorites as kid and also my kids to now
I loved this book as a kid brings back childhood memories and I was glad to find it :) but on the bummer side could not find it with audio had to buy the book and audio separately and it did not work on its own like other books I got and did the same and worked great but still works great if you know how read, had to get audio cause my little likes to read when she can and I'm a mom of four . but all in all a classic that will always live on

A Childhood Classic Read
My grandson, 3 yrs old, is a big fan of Thomas the Tank. This classic tale has become a favorite already, I think because it does have colorful drawings of the story and, it is about trains. He thinks twice now about saying " I can't". If he does, Grandma quietly repeats " I think I can, I think I can...". He will grin and forge ahead with the task or skill he was attempting. It is often one of his picks for a bedtime story. Train-loving child or not, the message is timeless.

Beautiful book - highly commended
This is a surprisingly large book - just over 12"/30cm tall, and it is an absolute classic. It is clearly intended to be read by more than 1 generation of children, as the hardcover binding is of the highest quality and looks particularly robust. It is a story of how kindness and perseverance can save the day, and how a positive attitude can achieve great things. What sets this edition apart is the stunning new illustrations. The cover picture on Amazon doesn't do it justice - these have to be some of the finest paintings ever produced for a children's book, and are works of art in their own right. They capture the mood of the characters beautifully and are an absolute delight. The book would be ideal for children aged 2-6 and is sure to become a much-loved favourite. I bought this for my children for Christmas and I can't wait to give it to them! This is a beautiful, top quality book with a wonderful, positive message. Very highly commended indeed.Update Jan 2009: Having given this to my youngest son (age 4) at Christmas, it is now his favourite book (and much loved by his 6-year-old brother too). It really is a superb book with a great story and beautiful pictures. I can't recommend this too highly - the image on Amazon does it no justice - it is an absolute delight.

Good But Slightly Disappointing Because Not the Original
Nice pictures and text but not exactly like the original story, which I had intended to share with my children when I bought this.We memorise the text of our favourite books as children and when we read it as an adult, there is nostalgia involved in our decision to buy sometimes. This was the case for me and also the source of my disappointment. If the book has no nostalgic value to you, I recommend buying it. It does have really lovely, modern-style, pictures and the story is fine.
