Amazing mini PC for retro gaming, streaming and general office work!
So declaration of interest, I have a GMKTek G3 already (N150 model) and thought I'd buy a second one for a dedicated TV box to play retro games. Amazon did a superb job with same day delivery and I've spent the evening setting it up.First impressions:This thing is tiny! See the photos, the device was supplied in it's box without any additional packaging which was about the size of 2 iPhone boxes stacked on top of each other! It truly fits in the the palm of your hand and you could really flip it into your backpack and take it anywhere with you!Specs and ports:The device is powered by Intel N97 processor, 12gb soldered on DDR5 ram (CPU-Z identifies these as Samsung), and has a generic TSCW 512gb SATA drive. In terms of connectivity, the device has 2 x USB 3 A on the front, one on the back as well as a single USB C port. Please note that the USB C port is only used to supply power. I tried it with my Anker Gan C charger and no issues at all. There are two HDMI ports and handily a TF card reader which is brilliant if you like retro games/handhelds. It's something that was dropped from my daily driver (Intel NUC) which I do miss.Set-up:On first boot, the G5 expands a pre-imaged W11 Pro installation that takes some time. After that, updates can take a couple of hours, I left this on and walked away for a bit. One thing to note is that the device comes preconfigured to go to 12W max, I changed this in the BIOS to 15W max and only got a marginal increase in fan noise.Performance & speed:This PC is suitable for casual office use with no issues with Word, Excel, Powerpoint 365 and general internet browsing. I left it streaming Youtube 4K for a bit to see if it would overheat and no issues there. I did a slightly unscientific test and zapped it at 30cm distance with my heat camera pointed at the side vents and about 42 degrees after general use.Storage:There is a generic TSCW 512gb drive in there which I tested with CrystalDiskInfo 8 and I've uploaded a screenshot of the speed. Ok for casual use and I'm not sure if it's upgradeable.Overall:This is an excellent Mini PC for those looking for office work, retro gaming, server/media home use. It's been stable, whisper quiet and I think I'll replace my GMKTek G3 with this as it's quite a bit smaller under the TV and can take a USB C supply which makes travelling with it really easy! 5* from me.

Perfect for media streaming
The media could not be loaded. I recently purchased the GMKtec, hoping to replace my bulky NUC11 i3 for something more discreet. The NUC served as my home media PC/server, but I was eager to improve my setup with a more compact and energy-efficient option, that also delivered the same level of performance. I'm pleased to say that the NucBox G5 has met all my expectations!Yes, the small size does come with a few downsides—like the unconventional M.2 2242 storage and soldered RAM, but these are justifiable trade-offs for housing a PC in such a small case. Measuring just 72 x 72 x 44.5mm and weighing in at a mere 168g, this PC is truly pocket-sized.One of my biggest concerns with the G5 was how well it would manage cooling when under pressure. Given its small enclosure, I anticipated the fan would spin into overdrive during demanding tasks. Surprisingly, while there was a slight bump in fan noise, it was barely noticeable. When idle, the PC is practically silent.TestingThe below tests were conducted with the PC set to maximum performance in Windows 11 and adjustments made to the BIOS (C-States enabled & 15W power draw). The results, which I've attached as screenshots, align with what can be expected with the N97 processor according to CPUbenchmark.net. In real world usage that meant when it came to test regular tasks such as running Microsoft Office, web browsing & media streaming, the computer was able to handle them effortlessly.Test ResultsCinebench [1st attachment]Browserbench (3rd attachment)Geekbench [GPU] (5th attachment)CrystalDiskMark (6th attachment)Geekbench [CPU] (7th attachment)Now, onto the most important matter—Plex performance! I ran two tests: the first involved playing a 4K HDR movie to a device that didn’t require downscaling, so it used less CPU, and the second was streaming a 4K HDR source to a 1080P SDR screen, which would result in more CPU power due to transcoding. Both tests were set to maximum performance with the “make my CPU hurt” option enabled. To my delight, the PC managed both with ease, with only a modest 40% hit on the more CPU-intensive task!Plex [4K HDR to 1080p SRR] (2nd attachment)Plex [4K HDR to 4K HDR compatible device] (4th attachment)I'm beyond excited about this nifty little box and can't wait to see what else it can do!

Impressed
Excellent machine. Quiet, fast, simple to use. Love windows 11. Impressed with the speed, benchmarks are great. Bought machine for roughly the same price as a high end graphics card. Does everything I want.

Game changer
My expectations for this tiny little PC have been blown out the water. I bought it to be a Plex media server. I was fully expecting to have it struggle with Windows 11 and I had a Linux distro all ready to go. No need. It runs really well. So well in fact, it has changed my perspective on what I actually need for day-to-day desktop browsing. My gaming PC uses 120W whilst browsing the web and watching YouTube. This thing uses about 5W doing that. Whilst sat idle doing nothing it uses 0.4W!Naturally it handles Plex server duties with no issues. I had 2 simultaneous streams running at 4K original quality and the processor barely hit 5% use.I am likely going to pick up another one just to have on the back of my monitor for general web browsing. Will pay for itself in a year from the reduced electricity bill!Something to bear in mind: The version of Windows 11 it comes with is stripped down modified version. Be sure to download the official ISO from the manufacturer's website so you can recover it later if needs be. Also download their official driver package. It worked with Windows 11's suggested drivers, but I could not stop the device from going to sleep after an hour regardless of power settings. Downloads also peaked at 500MB/s down on ethernet. After the official drivers were on it stopped going to sleep and I was able to hit my 1GB/s internet download speeds.
