cheaper alternative for tax prep
Worked as expected. Been using TT for several years now and it saved me a lot of money in tax prep fees. It's a little clunky to install and seems to have a patch/update every time you start it but once it's running it works well. Pleased with this so far. There are several options for free filing for those who qualify, but for those who have more complex situations (but not overly complex) this is an affordable way to get it done.

First year of TurboTax not offering desktop CD version
Many of you getting ready to file taxes for tax year 2024 using TurboTax are probably anxious about the discontinuance of Intuit not providing a CD version for desktop, which I have been using for over 2 1/2 decades. I like having everything on my computer where I can control it, and I was hesitant to do an install where you download your Install file and then have to have an intuit account to access information.I read the reviews for the first month and a half, and a lot of people were having problem with TurboTax. Just trying to get the product out of the door and not all the features were readily available, especially the ability to migrate previous tax year information into your tax form.Well, as of November 29, 2024, I feel very comfortable with the TurboTax deluxe federal version. The install was smooth and seamless. and very intuitive. I was able to migrate all the information from last year‘s tax return to simplify my tax filing for 2024. And like many TurboTax users, you can be rested assured that we will be getting updates over the next couple months as IRS releases more and more information to assist us in filing taxes, I was always hesitant to update TurboTax after filing my tax returns since I wanted the information to remain as filed. But the updates only increased stability and security for TurboTax and did not adversely affect any of my TurboTax filings. I always hoped, however, that maybe I would get a bump in a refund because of new tax law, but that has never happened. So go ahead and try it out and you will be pleasantly surprised that everything works even this early in the game and for Amazon‘s offering of $38 for the federal deluxe version you can’t go wrong. I was able to review my taxes and the one change that I had to make for the latter part of this year was because of a better performance out of a savings account Which obviously affected my tax obligation by the end of the year. But I can’t complain about paying 16% tax on $4000 of savings and income, which would’ve been the same had I known about the savings account earlier in the year. So the nice thing is that you can Check your taxes out right now and make any minor adjustments to simplify the actual filing after your forms come in during the next two months :)

Good. Not perfect.
I have used TT for years, Federal and the Federal/State version when we lived in Louisiana. It is pretty effective, once you learn the UI process. It saved me $600.00 in taxes this year via the Energy Tax Credit and a new Rheem HVAC we had installed in 2024. Glad I itemized. One annoying feature, occurs every year, if you have Federal only edition they will try and upsell you the State filing in complete disregard for whether you live in a state that has income tax (like Louisiana). I live in Florida now, they should know that and not push state filing on me when I click into the Federal e-file dialogue. They also try and upsell you on tax consulting and audit protection. Ignore and click though. Some people may not be sure and purchase what they don’t need.Probably use it next year. Assuming the IRS is still operational.

Accurate but Turbo Tax should be much easier to use
If you used Turbo Tax in 2023 probably should stay with Turbo Tax else find something else.I purchased Turbo Tax (TT) Deluxe federal only (I live in Florida which doesn’t have a state income tax) as a download rather than the CD version. I have been using TT to do my taxes for over 20 years and am running the software on a Windows 10 PC with excellent performance specs. The download and installation was fast and problem free. The activation of the software requires that you have an Intuit (company that now owns TT) account which is fine as this is apparently how they prevent unlicensed use of the product. After launching TT it quickly found my 2023 return and asked if I wanted to transfer it which I always do as it saves a lot of time completing the current year’s taxes. The transfer was quick and worked well. I tried to import some of my financial data through TT in late January as I had received an email from my broker saying that all of my 1099s were ready but TT said that I couldn’t import until 2/18. I was able to import the tax data on 2/1 so it was apparently a delay in TT updating institutions’ tax form release dates.Importing the data worked fine and comparing the imported data to the 1099 forms on the financial institutions’ web sites confirmed that the data was imported completely and accurately. I will point out that I had problems in previous years with imports from Ally Bank when there were more than 2 Ally 1099s (1 for each CD or account) in that only the 1st 2 1099s were imported by TT.The TT help function is almost completely worthless. I ran into the following problems;• It took me 5 minutes to figure out where to type my question. The Help function opens a window and I finally found out that the box where you type your question was below the bottom of my PC screen so I couldn’t see it. There isn’t a vertical scroll bar on the help window so you need to click & hold on the top of the window and drag the window up high enough for the entry box to appear. TT doesn’t remember where you want the window to appear.• I was trying to find out where to change my estimated income for 2025 so as to adjust my estimate tax payments which took me about 30 minutes. I kept getting messages that TT didn’t know what I wanted and being forwarded to answers from TT users which were wrong.• I also kept getting instructions to enter the IRS form 1040 ES with a dash from a user answer suggesting that TTs help can’t differentiate between 1040 ES and 1040ES and 1040-ES.• One instruction told me to go to TT’s forms and click on 1040-ES which I did. It then took me some time to figure out how to get back to TT’s input screens. You need to click VIEW and then select STEP-BY-STEP. There should have been an obvious button rather than an option from a drop down menu.TT asks too many questions too many times• TT is constantly asking if I want Audit defense and other add on services every time I go through the check for errors section after making changes. I understand that they want to make money but ask me once and then stop badgering me or ask me once and then not again until I am about to electronically transmit my return.• When entering the final steps in preparation which you do several times after making changes TT asks me to start my state return. TT already knows that I live in Florida which doesn’t have a state income tax.• Every time when I get to the Review Summary screen and click the CONTINUE button nothing happens for about 3 minutes and it appears that TT has locked up. It might be that TT is checking my TT license to make sure that I have a license before proceeding and I hope that TT is not uploading my form data to their servers else I would look for another software package for sure.• There are some questions that TT asks every time I leave a section which seems like a waste of time. Do I have any crypto assets, do I have a foreign bank account, etc. Ask once and then if necessary to confirm then do so when I am starting the e-file process. In summary, TT doesn’t appear to do a lot of user testing to make it easier to use their software. I’m sure that they do a lot of canned testing for accuracy which of course is paramount but TT could make the process less frustrating for the user.

Super simple and efficient
I've used Turbo Tax for many years, saving loads on accountants. I love how it runs you through each section (or when you get more knowledgeable, you can just jump to whatever you want to work on). It compares your last years return so it's very easy to ensure you've entered all items properly. You can do paper or efile. A little help button pops up for sections to explain the items which is SUPER helpfuL!
