The frequency response is stated to be 50 - 7000hz, BUT I would not pay attention to the 50hz side of that. It won't do well above 7000hz, but it can definitely go lower than 50hz. I've designed multiple subwoofers under 5 inches that can hit below 40hz easily. All it takes is for the box to be tuned correctly. Don't underestimate the power of a tuned enclosure!

Q: can this speaker be used as a subwoofer?

It has a great sound good frequency response and is a very good overall speaker but is not a true subwoofer.

Q: I want to use them to replace the woofer in a set of jbl j520m surround sound (rear channel) speakers, is that a good idea?

As long as they fit and the impedance is correct, these would be a great replacement speaker. They have great sound and a wide frequency response. I was very pleased with them. I too used them as a replacement speaker. Good choice.
