The Art of Surfcasting with Lures

Great beginner book with a few lessons for a seasoned vet
I've been fishing since I was a kid and this book was pretty good. Its more for the beginner who is just starting out in the surf and knows very little rather than a seasoned vet. Reason why I say that is because most of the tips and tricks I already knew. I spent a lot of time around the B&T shop as a kid listening and learning some of the info written in the book. The other half of the info I learned from my own trial and error and putting my time in letting the fish decided which retrieve, lures, color, size, profile and bait were best. I also learned on my own which tides, moon, time and weather had the best fishing. I also use to run into a lot of older season vets as a teenager while fishing who would show and teach me how to fish when they saw I was not catching when they were. All of the info in this book besides type of tackle needed means nothing or very little if you don't put your time and homework in. Its also a good book for seasoned vets to brush up on their skills and to read some of the authors fishing success and failures. The book for me help my see some things I was doing wrong and it also showed some things I did out of pure instinct and common sense. I also enjoyed reading all of his stories and experiences as I related to most of them. The book is very easy to understand and reads like a everyday fisherman you might run into and talk with, wrote it. The book has detailed info on what lures work best depending on current, structure, time of day, etc. Detailed breakdown on tides, weather, structure, lures, moon phases, tips and tricks for fishing them. The best advice is to put your time in and do your homework. Don't expect to run down to the beach after reading this book or any other, throw a line in and catch a fish, that rarely happens. All the tips, suggestions and opinions on what works best, when and where mean nothing, they are just suggestions to help guide you to success. What works for one, might not work for another.

Perfect if You're From LI
But very little attention is given for other beaches and target species. If you're from LI or target Blue Fish and Stripers with giant 2-4 oz slinging surf poles, this book is for you. However, these fish are not available in S. CA. where the majority of surf fisherman use lighter tackle to target smaller surf fish, and reserve the large poles for chucking bait to sharks and rays. The information within this book is solid and presented in an easy to read, often humorous manner. The book is filled with important surf fishing info that is invaluable even if you are not from LI, such as the most important skill of reading structure, and personal accounts of what lures to use in what situations. It would be nice to see a revision that might include surf fishing with light tackle and simple breakdowns of surf fishing on different coasts.Shipping came to me all the way across the country super fast and was autographed by the author. I wasn't expecting that, but goes to show the author's frequent personal touch that is found throughout this book. This book caught my attention as it is unique as the only one with a focus on lures used from the surf. If I could give 1/2 stars, I'd give this book 3 1/2. My lack of stars is due solely to the focus on LI.

Like fishing with a buddy
Learning to fish is a combination of experience and learning from other sources such as friends and media. Reading Zeno Hornin most closely resembles spending time with a fishing buddy. For those who favor terse English, you might find Zeno Homin a little long winded. If you do read him, you will find nuggets of fishing knowledge that you probably could only learn from experience. My suggestion is to pair "The Art of Surfcasting with Lures" with "The Surfcaster's Guide to Baits, Rigs and Lures" by Milt Rosko. I would read Rosko first. Here's a clue to what you will find. For years I would go into a tackle shop and ask what were the fish hitting on? The clerks would point me to a lure and I would walk out happy only later to be skunked and left thinking the lure simply didn't work. The important question is not only what lures but how do you fish them. That answer will involve things like where do you throw them, how do you retrieve them, when do you use them and what will your rod tell you about how are they swimming. Milt and Zeno are good buddies.

A lot of technical information and fun anecdotes.
Shipping time is good. The book's content is great, there are inforamtion that you will not find on website.Topics about several types of lures, its utilization and a little of history about them were good for me.There is a lot to learn from this book, on strategies, what time is the best for fishing (moon, tide, rock caves, surfs, currents, etc).Pros:*all above.*Just the necesary pictures.*a lot of good explanation on all Fishings topics*how to introduce kind to fishing.*Some info about coonservation.*How to work with each lure, including sizes and colors.*Bottom structure and sea currents with drawings, this is amazing!!. Barely seen on most books.*very easy to read; some anecdotes are including making this book fun to read. Really appreacite it.Cons:*Few incormation about rods, beter brans, cost and selection on the tackle chapter.*It needs more drawings on the arrangements for the fishing line with the lure. This book will not teach you to fishing with hooks and weights (lead), just with lures.Greatly recommended.

Great book
This book is really great for anyone who wants to start lure fishing off the beach or for anyone who has experience but is looking for some extra tips. I have been lure fishing for the last 17 years and have learned a lot more than I thought I would. The book talks about specific areas of fishing but what's great is the advice on being able to look for structures, sandbars, rips etc. can be utilised anywhere in the world.
