An Unusual Yet Charming Slice of Life
Tanaka-kun is Always Listless is a very peculiar show. Its premise will sound familiar as it concerns the day-to-day life of our high school protagonist and his circle of friends; hardly new ground for an anime. However, this particular show works well because it features a protagonist who is unlike most anime protagonists I've ever seen. Tanaka is not trying to fit in or be cool, he's not trying to win the heart of a popular girl or become a star student; he just wants to get through the day by expending as little energy as humanly possible. As I said above, Tanaka is a perpetually lazy high school boy who passes his time by daydreaming or sleeping. This could make for a potentially boring show but the entertainment derives from his interactions with his schoolmates. His best friend Ohta is the complete opposite of him; responsible, attentive and always looking to help someone out. Tanaka also gains a few admirers along the way, one girl respecting him for his listlessness and another liking him because he sees past the superficial stuff, seeing her for who she is. Don't worry, though, it's not a harem; they just like him.The reason this show works is because of how Tanaka becomes this figure to whom multiple people are drawn to in spite of (or even because of) his aloof attitude towards life. Because he doesn't care what others think of him or what they might do, they don't feel the need to hide from him; he betters others because he won't judge them one way or the other. His passivity earns him admiration and respect, even though he doesn't care about either. It's refreshing to have an anime protagonist who isn't actively trying to be friends with everyone.I also have to say the show's presentation also deserves praise. The characters are well drawn, well animated and none of them exhibit outlandish characteristics; everything seems proportional and grounded. I also really enjoyed the soundtrack; some of the music is delightfully quirky and at other times is more in line with typical anime fare. Always entertaining, though.Tanaka-kun is a different kind of slice of life anime. Its main character isn't looking to fit in or make friends, he just kind of exists and draws people in by being himself. It's refreshing that a show gives us something different for once. Give it a try, I doubt you'll regret it.

Cute series, very laid-back and... zzzzz
Tanaka is a high school boy who would like nothing more than to sleep all day. His classmates and friends would really like him to stay awake, especially in class...I love these sorts of series. Very low key, but fun and cute. Similar shows include Daily Lives of High School Boys and Tonari No Seki-Kun . There isn't a whole lot in the way of story (but there is some), but the characters manage to be endearing and entertaining all the same.

BluRay 2nd disc does not have Japanese spoken language.
Let me start by saying I love this show. The show isn't getting a 2 star review. The anime itself would get all 5. The BluRay however has an issue. Disc 2 will not allow you to select Japanese as the spoken language. I thought it was just the one I bought. But I have been through 3 so far and still no Japanese on the second disc. The American actors can't capture just how listless Tanaka is. They still sound like they are peppy and high at the same time when trying to sound listless. The difference in how voice actors affect the tone of the show is really displayed in disc 2.If you are going to get it and want the subtitle version, stick with the DVD.
