Mortal Trash: Poems Paperback – August 1, 2017

If you love gossip about your wayward cousin. If you strain to hear your family saying nasty things about her in quiet tones when she is not present. Sexual things spoken in hushed tones behind the open freezer door to drown the funk going down. If you have secret desires for forbidden experiences in your day dreams you can’t even describe. Then continue the clandestine erotacy and buy Mortal Trash for the sake of a felony-free afternoon.

Addonizio is as passionate and irrelevant as always with a bit more piss, vinegar, and melancholy than in earlier collections. Addonizio's work here is always witty but sometimes moves from the profound to callow. I did enjoy the sonnets although it always reads like Shakespeare meets Berrigan, which is not particularly unique. That said, despite some similarities in subject matter and a lot of similar territories covered about sex and aging, I found this book pretty refreshing and often quite funny.

Mortal Trash, the new book of poetry by Kim Addonizio, my favorite bad girl poet, takes familiar themes and addresses them with the wisdom and hindsight of adulthood. Maybe things don't turn out like one would hope, maybe time turns out to be a cheat and ones decisions come back to haunt you. If you have ever been tragically hip and then regretted it, you must purchase this. I am glad I did.

This is an excellent read. You will discover new, delightful things in the writing each time you read it.

loved it accessible poems yet something profound in each honest, moving, irreverent in some ways and reverent in others

these poems are lush, imaginative, fearless, irreverent, knowing, totally relatable, yet timeless and surreal

not quite 5 star for me but some really cool/clever lines in this book much better than a majority of the poetry i've read not pretentious feeling at all which is refreshing. check it out
