The Heads’ final blast
This is Talking Heads’ final album, the swan song of this highly innovative and mould-breaking band from the 1980s.The music is an unorthodox blend of styles spiced with David Byrne’s lyrical quirkiness, best expressed in the number ‘Nothing but Flowers’ where in some post-apocalyptic future the singer laments the passing of the machine age and the air pollution of the past; now it’s ‘nothing but flowers’ and feels dull by comparison. ‘Totally Nude’ in contrast professes naturist sentiments and has a South Sea Islands flavour.Musically TH were here at the top of their game and although not every song works brilliantly, the result is never less than interesting with multiple themes weaving clever patterns often over Latin base rhythms.‘Naked’ however doesn’t feel like an album of distinctive character and concept; rather a catch-all of leftover songs, of bits and pieces. Whilst not TH’s greatest moment, the result is more than just OK and way better than most music churned out during this era. It was, in retrospect, a fine exit for this band after its time in the sun.

One of their best
Chiming guitars, intricate percussion, a cavalcade of lush textures and exotic rhythmns galore. Lilting melodies and wry, playful lyrics all wrapped up in a crystalline production job.Lighter and more colourful and expansive than Talking Heads' similarly excellent "Remain in Light" and "Stop Making Sense," this is a must for all fans of shiny, adventurous guitar pop.
