a house divided
So this was a gift for our son. He loves STEM items and building and we thought this would be a great option for him. What I love - this is a very hands on item and keeps him busy and keeps him thinking. He likes the challenge and the ability to transform and change the toy. What I don't love - the pieces and toy itself feel and look cheap. When he first dumped all the pieces I was kind of shocked to see how many they were and was concerned it didn't actually build a very big robot. My son is on team "great toy" he doesn't seem to think the toy has any issues or flaws. Even though he has had issues with the solar power functions. I find it underwhelming and it cheap. This seems like one of those toys that they play with for a few weeks then you'll find pieces of it all over your house, you'll slowly start throwing them away and the toy will end up being trashed not long after because its missing half it pieces and missing any appeal it first held. Just personal preference here though. If your someone who has a very tidy and organized kid, this will probably be a decent toy.

Well-conceived budget STEM kit that works
The media could not be loaded. I got this kit to build with my 11 year old daughter, who is into robots and building toys (Lego and K'Nex primarily). The box indicates ages 10+, and I would agree.ConstructionThe kit comes well-packaged, with all parts either bagged or on pop-out frames (like plastic models). One nice thing is that the manufacturer thought to include some stickers and extra recloseable bags to store the parts.I did learn a new word from this kit - "Robotistic" :)AssemblyWe decided - or rather my daughter decided - to try the Rolly-Bot. The first thing we noted was that the instructions recommend a wire cutter, which we were fortunate enough to have on hand. My daughter's favorite part was snipping the parts out and cleaning off the burrs. If you don't own a wire cutter, a toenail clipper will do in a pinch, but it's really not nearly as easy to use. You could go old-school and use an X-Acto knife as well, but you may not be interested in dealing with the necessary safety precautions of using such a sharp blade. It's probably best to get yourself an inexpensive pair of small wire cutters if you're interested in STEM kits - you'll use it again for sure. The parts fit relatively well together, though there was a little slop in some of the pins, though not enough to hinder functionality. I would also recommend using a toothpick to push some of the decals into tight spaces. One of the interesting things (to me, an engineer) was the use of coil springs as electrical connectors - instead of screwing the motor leads to posts, you push them between coils of the spring. Voila - simple connection! The pictorial instructions are easy to follow and generally well laid out. Everything worked out of the box. We have yet to build any of the other models, but are particularly interested in the boat and surfer!
