Disappointing
I didn't enjoy this book I really did the premises sounded amazing however I found the writing chunky, and hard to read at times.I honestly feel like I may have missed messages and themes in the book because of the writing, there was also big chunks that just seemed pointless. My favourite character was brog maybe becaus ei found his parts easier to read then others.

Masterclass in character study
Obviously I picked this up because of the current hype about the Wicked film (which by the way is incredible) and expected a light hearted retelling from the Wicked Witch’s point of view. Instead I got a beautifully profound novel about good and evil. The way Maguire has written these well loved characters is seriously superb; we are never in any doubt of their motivations, each has a clear moral standard of their own which is thoughtfully explored throughout the book. The plot is equally charming and disturbing, the political landscape is well developed, and the tension oozes off every page.I loved it and would recommend it to anyone be they a Wicked fan or not.Dazzling and surprising, I plan to continue the series and immerse myself in Gregory Maguire’s beautiful writing once again.PS. It is NOT a children’s book

immersive, dark reimagining
You will either love or hate the story telling style of this book. I am firmly one of the former. The use of reimagining of the wizard of oz story extends not just to the narrative itself but also the words used, often taking a word known to us and spelling slightly differently or having a slightly different meaning. The book captures a number of topics societally relevant today, racism, classism, veganism, religion and its influence on war not to mention tiktokers and it similarity to our current advancements in robotics. This all with an immersive story that is both dark, enlightening and sprinkled with humor. I highly recommend!

Very different to the musical/movie
This is the second time I've read this. The first time was years ago, before I'd even seen the musical.II still enjoyed it second time around, although it's the same premise, the story itself differs from the musical and the newly released movie (which follows the musical). The language takes some getting used to, but it's easy enough to follow. Would definitely recommend.
