26 pages of Text - 129 pages of beautifully drawn Sigils
I'm so sorry to give this book such a low rating. Sincerely. Ten points for the absolutely beautiful drawings. In my opinion, this book was rushed to the publishers, with the result that too much time was dedicated to the drawings and not enough time on the textual information. There are typos, generalisations, no references, it is not flushed out enough. I am researching for my own book, so resources are tight. For the money that I paid, (approx €16.00 inc shipping) it did not represent good value to me. Okay, I'm a skinflint, but I am not alone in expecting to get something more than twenty-six pages of text for €14.00 with a further one-hundred-and-twenty-six pages of, albeit, beautiful, purpose specific sigil drawings. I expected a lesson on sigil magick, I wanted a symbolic alphabet or numbers with corresponding letters of the kamea system.I loved the discussion on Mantra Activation. A bit more meat on the bones, would have helped. Same for the Yoga positions, could have been longer for novices like me. I found the suggestion of flagellation rather surprising, however that's probably just me, but I am reminded of the scene from Angels & Demons where the monk beats himself. If there are later editions, and I hope that there are, I'd hope that K.P. Theodore would flush out the discussion and assertion that sigils gain their significance from the collective consciousness (Jungian theory), and that these are 'catholic symbols' (p. 3), the author gives us examples of the cross, pentacle and the ouroboros. I can check off on the cross as a symbol of Christianity and the circle as a symbol of Paganism (the cycle of life). I have a copy of S.L. MacGregor Mathers translation and edited version of The Key of Solomon the King with Angelic lore and pentacles that I thought came from Judaism (Kabbalah). I would really like to know where I have gone wrong here because I was under the impression that although pentacles were used in medieval times, and many Popes are believed to have practised magic, I do not know where we are on the timeline between Christianity and the separation of Catholic from Protestant. Where do I stamp definitively on that timeline Catholic/Vatican/Christian assertion of collective consciousness in the appropriation of symbols.Additionally, the ouroboros is an ancient symbol of a snake or a dragon eating its own tail, according to my information this symbol dates back to Ancient Egypt, Wikipedia note 14th BC, yes it appears in Renaissance magic. Interestingly the ouroboros symbolises the 'eternal return' a philosophy that is embraced by Friedrich Nietzsche the postmodern philosopher that influenced Austin Osman Spare creator of Chaos magick and the use of sigil magick. 'Atavistic resurgence’ is Spare's take on 'eternal return', I think? I was hoping that somebody was further down that road than me.The Fundamental Book of Sigil Magick would benefit greatly if the textual content were expanded, included more in-depth research, a unique system for the reader to create their own sigils, because I can just go online to a sigil generator and its all done for me, for free, and they're pretty special. My takeaway from the book is the Mantra Activation method. I don't feel anymore confident designing my own sigils, but I really do love some of those included.I hope this helps. The drawing on the front cover is fabulous also.
